For all those who feared that psychedelia in hip-hop would result in a whitewash, Shabazz Palaces is the answer, a meshing of laptop trickery, live instrumentation, and rap that has been vetted by the underground over decades. Ishmael "Palaceer Lazaro" Butler, formerly "Butterfly" of Digable Planets, leads the collective, with cohorts Baba Maraire from Zimbabwe and Silk (aka Dougie). Their name is derived from Nation of Islam scriptures, and accordingly their agile and intricate rap lyrics have a pro-black bent, mixed in with abstract poetry that nods to Busdriver and Aesop Rock. Their production is bizarre, heavily effected, and eclectic by way of incorporating things like Indonesian gamelan and American soul. In 2009 they did a dual release of their Of Light/Shabazz Palaces, which won blanket praise. Three Imaginary Girls summed it up, "Both are essential purchases for those who remember exactly when hip-hop took over rock's legacy in universal pop art; and for those longing for a new chronicle based on the faithful elements of that genre." Their third album Black Up is slated for release June 28.

THEESATISFACTION

With so much needless machismo infesting the ranks of hip-hop, many feel like a lot of talent has gone to waste, its transcendental potential stifled. The ladies in THEESatisfaction are the answer to this disappointment. Rather than tacking on superfluous gimmicks onto hip-hop's elements, they turn these techniques inward, manifesting the bizarre, psychedelic and polyrhythmic structures hinted at by RZA and J Dilla. Vocally, Lauryn Hill is recalled, with layered rhyme schemes and a smooth vocal tone that deliberately weaves in and out of the frenetic samples. Keep an eye on these two stoner chicks and an ear on their refreshingly strange sounds.

We feel a little ripped off. We were told that the British consulate wanted to throw a party celebrating the royal wedding, ascots required, secret handshakes, pillaged remains, the whole nine. Instead, it becomes this insane, perverted take on bingo, which really doesn't need much more excitement, thank you very much. We were a little worried that this whole thing would be too frenetic for our club atmosphere, but a contract is a contract, even if we didn't understand it. In hindsight it was a pretty straightforward document, but we thought it was in the Queen's English. The rules of Underground Rebel Bingo are listed on their website:

Everyone employed at Santos gets pumped on different shows or parties every day. This asshole Marketing Director tends to stoke out on hardcore and metal shows. Naturally, I've been excited to see Trash Talk and Off! for months. Even with a bum leg last time Trash Talk was here, singer Lee Spielman still ended up standing on our north bar setting it off.

And as seen on the video below, dudes didn't exactly hold back this time around. Spielman sung and ignited pits in pretty much every corner of our beloved North Pole. And it ruled. While I got a little too twisted to stick around for Off! (I saw them 86 times at SXSW anyway), Trash Talk still blew my mind. Highlights included watching RCRDLBL head-honco and Santos' bro Elliot Aronow circle pit and fuck up his arm (prior to saying the phrase 'hardcore rules'), watching Nick Zinner get into Cerebral Ballzy, and feeling the effects of my bro Nick from Alpha & Omega stage dive on top of me at least 10 times. Oh, and of course me stage diving directly onto the floor at about the 3:10 mark. All in all, a solid night.

For all the dudes in the world is freaking out because Odd Future stage dives a bunch during their shows, they should probably go to a Trash Talk show to see the real deal (not hating, just saying). Real-life brothers and dynamic garage duo Jeff The Brotherhood might be considered a breakout artist these days, but the youngsters have been power-riffing away since the early 2000’s when Jamin and Jake Orrall were in their mid-teens. Their sound is huge compared to their modest setup – a lightly outfitted trap kit and a guitar minus three strings, but the grooves they lay down are weighty and dense, perfectly complimenting their mature songwriting. Strictly DIY in practice, the group run their own label Infinity Cat, and through it produced and released their 2010 album Heavy Days, recorded by Roger Moutenot (Yo La Tengo, Sleater Kinney, Velvet Underground ).

SCREAMING FEMALES
Heavily touted by the likes of Ted Leo and BrooklynVegan, the pop-inspired punk rock of Screaming Females is an undeniably jarring mixture of coarseness and brilliant songwriting. Somehow, they pour on layers of memorable melody despite being a humble trio. Marissa Paternoster earns the most attention as the guitar-savvy frontwoman with the versatile yell as befits the band’s name. Pitchfork approves, saying, “Punk has traditionally prized attitude over abilities, but Screaming Females have both: Rather than muzzle their ferocity, the band's tight, tense dynamic amplifies the fuck-off stridency of their fourth LP, Castle Talk.”

JUICEBOXXX
The otherworldly sounds of Juiceboxxx, producer and sometimes rapper, are rooted in hip-hop, but share a kinship with glitch, house, electro, punk and various underground club musics. The world of music journalism is just warming up to this young talent, thanks in no small part to his slot supporting Public Enemy on tour.

The mutation through which music has gone at the hands of the internet has changed our idea of authenticity and the notion of purists. What used to be sell-out is now the paradigm and vice versa. So it’s ironic that a band like Trash Talk can become known as rogues by simply keeping their violent sound unadulterated. Drawing primarily from old crossover era thrash metal and hardcore, they have perfected and slightly updated the techniques of brutality, hiding layers of deceptive complexity under heavily distorted riffs, artillery percussion, and untiring screams. The band have taken full ownership of their vision, publishing their own records and books through their Trash Talk Collective imprint, closely allied with the world of skating. In a review for their 2010 release Eyes & Nines, Pitchfork praised them for “conveying absolute fury,” declaring, “And though you can probably listen to the album more than once on your morning commute, it still works as a full-immersion experience, its sludgy roar hitting hard on a visceral gut-level."

OFF!
Going into 2011’s SXSW, one of the most discussed acts in heavy music is OFF!, a veritable underground supergroup, boasting members such as vocalist Keith Morris (who served in Black Flag and Circle Jerks) and bassist Steven McDonald (Redd Kross). At first, they present tightly honed punk chops with streetwise inflection, but the complexity these musicians have built over the years soon reveals itself upon second listen. Guitarist Dimitri Coats explains, "There's a dark sarcasm that's prevalent throughout his body of work and it fits with what we're trying to get across with our band." They formed in 2009 and in late 2010 released a compilation of their first four EP’s, with 16 tracks boasting just over a minute’s length each, true OG punk style.Punknews has gotten on board, saying “With 16-minute shows and 18-minute "albums," OFF! is reclaiming what can be absolutely great about punk rock. There's not a millisecond of wasted time, not a single wasted breath, not a single crack of the drums that doesn't drive the music forward. That's”

CEREBRAL BALLZY
The Brooklyn quintet Cerebral Ballzy can boast an accomplishment that most punk groups envy: a balance between snark and ferociousness. Often seen playing alongside Japanther and the Death Set, they recall the era of Minor Threat and Bad Brains with remarkable accuracy.

On March 25th at Santos Party House, the crews from Funkbox, Toca Tuesdays and Rock Steady will throw down, with a DJ line-up featuring hip-hop radio and nightlife pioneer Stretch Armstrong, soulful house production genius Louie Vega, Tony Touch himself, a producer, rapper and cultural bridge between hip-hop and latin culture. Salem's founding member John Holland told Dazed and Confused, "I feel inspired musically when I see a large burning fire in the middle of the forest, smoke and fog, large waves and expansive bodies of water. But our birthplace is the woods, so that remains a part of us." Though the scant lyrics in the band's music are often obscured by gusts of haunting production, but the primary invocations of the paranormal, dark, and the isolated parts of the human here are startling vivid; the band's mythic history with drugs, depression and prostitution are merely inferred. Their beats are slow, menacing takes on inner city club music, house, dub, crunk and juke. Holland and his partners Heather Marlatt and Jack Donoghue share production and vocal duties, with neo-Romantic melodies infiltrating synth sounds from new wave and industrial electronica, all filtered through the band's close personal bond and profoundly dark worldview. Cokemachineglow extolled their 2010 debut full-length King Night, saying, "Salem evokes the seismic thrill of a good Gucci drop alongside all of Nico’s ghostly beauty within the very framework and timbre of their productions. The result is no less than one of 2010’s most exciting debuts."

We've been taking great pains over the past couple of years to make our downstairs level an incredible club and music venue in its own right, so when we decided to also make the entire thing an art installation by the world famous Peter Doig the media was sure to take notice.

The New York Times' Ben Detrick stopped by our Emergency Party unveiling celebration in and was pretty impressed by what he saw. His article comes with a nice little slideshow.

Last Saturday, a stream of artists, fashion designers, gallery owners, writers and their scene-y cohorts descended into the basement of Santos Party House, which had been transformed into a rotating art installation. It was the return of the Emergency Party — a kind of Warhol Factory meets a dive bar started by Parinaz Mogadassi, a curator, and Spencer Sweeney, one of Santos’s art-minded owners.

Peter Doig, an abstract painter from Trinidad, colored the cinderblock walls in one corner in Caribbean pastels. The artist Rita Ackermann and Lizzi Bougatsos, a musician in the electronic group Gang Gang Dance, contributed paintings that hung in the upstairs windows, and remade an Ol’ Dirty Bastard track that played in the entrance.

“People are trying to get back that ’80s thing where the art world and clubbing was synonymous,” said Matthew Higgs, the director of the White Columns gallery.

By midnight, as a fog machine clouded the air and disco thumped, the club was packed with a raffish crowd that included a sprinkling of stars like Chloë Sevigny and MC Spank Rock.

Stuffy music critics tend to label Marnie Stern “artrock,” perhaps because the idea of a woman commanding progressive metal is easier for them to stomach when referred to by misty catchalls. But with all due respect, none who have been branded as such can shred this well, and Stern possesses the finger-tapping acumen that Eddie Van Halen would envy. Her music runs the gamut in terms of emotional bent, but as a whole it is bright and uplifting, propelled by fleet polyrhythms and Stern’s playful lyricism. Pitchfork has said of her second self-titled LP released in 2010, “There's plenty here for musicians to analyze and dissect with envy, but first and foremost, this is an album for the body and the soul.”

TERA MELOS
The mischievous and infinitely original nature of Tera Melos does not give easily to classification. Their harmonic sensibilities fit tenuously in the world of post-hardcore, but the phrasing of be-bop and the raw irreverence of punk are also very present in the music. And while most of their grooves don’t require a calculator, expect odd rhythms and whimsical time signatures to enter into the fray. The technical superiority of this trio is adds density to their music, making it infinitely relistenable, while allowing them to expand into heavier and/or stranger sonic territories. They’re currently hot off the heels of the release of their Zoo Weather EP, a compilation of original jams as well as remixes.

HEADLESS HORSEMAN
The profundity of Headless Horseman is in their ability to reveal the menacing in nearly every kind of music they explore in their psychedelic collage of styles. You’ve got your pop, folk, blues, dance and noise music all handled efficiently, with a healthy dose of the sinister underlying everything. Electronic trickery is the centerpiece of their sound, with guitars, drums and various acoustic appendages adding to the mix, all handled by Connor O’Neill and Fareed Sajan (Bottle Up & Go) . Stereogum called them a "band to watch," we'll do them one better and give them a listen!

And not to outdo ourselves, but the next move will be to fit our venue within the confines of the Scoot Inn for an intense, FREE party that we've put together along with the folks at Thrasher Skateboard Magazine, Converse and Official.fm. The line-up is absolutely awe-inspiring. Pentagram, who was paving the way for metal at the same time as Black Sabbath, will clean up after grindhouse child prodigy rap crew Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All puts it down, Das Racist mesmerizes with rhymes way ahead of their time, Killer Mike (aka Mike Bigga) blesses us with his new futuristic material, and Fang Island sets the floor ablaze with uplifting riffs. Also playing live sets will be Green & Wood, Alpha & Omega, Danny Brown, and Balance & Composure, with New York's own Ghe20 G0thik crew cutting up the turntables and your host, the United Nations recognized King Of Partying, Andrew W.K.. Though concise and focused, the Brighton pop quartet Fujiya & Miyagi can be hard to pin down. Constructed of Krautrock riffs arranged into snappy downtempo grooves, their tracks achieve a subtle complexity by weaving together numerous influences, of which the band cites Can, Kraftwerk and Aphex Twin. The band came together in 2000 during a game of soccer football and their most recent upgrade was the addition of a live percussionist. Playful lyrics approaching dark subject matter are uttered by Davie Best, who claims, “I physically am unable to shout. It’s a medical condition.”

Their 2011 album Ventriloquizzing is the bands newest evolutionary step, displaying a level of skill that fully and effectively utilizes the quartet format for deeper personal exploration. Best describes the band’s topical choices on the album, “Themes like control, frustration, disappointment, violence. It doesn’t sound like a barrel of laughs when you say them out loud, but it’s not a depressing record.” Popmatters says the Ventriloquizzing “expands the band’s palette” and “may be Fujiya & Miyagi’s best album to date.”

PROJECT JENNY, PROJECT JAN
Jeremy Haines and Sammy Rubin are masters of sonic disguise, using their production prowess to create an extremely diverse repertoire of jams completely disembodied from physicality or genre. Most of their songs are danceable with cheeky lyrics and labyrinth beats but the similarities end there. Gothamist remarked, “This is a band that should be taken seriously, even while singing about homemade sex tapes and the Chinatown bus."

Odd Future, the LA collective of arthouse shock hip-hoppers invaded SPH for a sold-out show. Celebrities, musicians, politicians, models, punks, rappers and scumbags of all stripes were in attendance for the raucous evening helmed by the team of syllable-slinging teenagers signed to XL Recordings. The media was also in the building, resulting in a heap of photos documenting the melee.

(New York - February 10, 2011) - While many people associate Santos Party House with late-night dancing, the best live shows, and co-owner Andrew W.K., the venue quests for creative domination in more ways thanvonly music, the most recent of which is turning the venue into a canvas for some of the most forward-thinking luminaries in the visual arts. “Somebody Arted In Here!” is an ongoing rotation of diverse art installations.

Each visual event will be accompanied by a late-night rager, a party complimenting the theme of each unique art piece in an idiosyncratic way. The first event in the series showcases world-renowned artist Peter Doig, who will take over the Santos South Pole (downstairs), while Lizzi Bougatsos of Gang Gang Dance, and artist Rita Ackermann transform our massive storefront windows with their own custom installation pieces.

“Somebody Arted In Here!” -- Spencer Sweeney, one of the founding owners of Santos Party House and an art visionary in his own right, will lead a series of legends and emerging icons as they push the venue beyond its limits, converting the nightclub into a full-on optical playground. Santos is grateful for the tremendous support of our partners, including Gavin Brown’s Enterprise, White Columns, The Social Registry, and Leg Up Management. Sweeney’s aim is for the art displayed at Santos to reflect the spirit of creative freedom that is associated with the club. “Somebody Arted In Here!” is the next evolutionary step for Spencer’s ongoing vision of a living art statement - a tradition he began with a weekly underground party called “Sessions” in Santos’ downstairs space. This series eventually mutated into the “Emergency Party,” Sweeney’s legendary late night DJ dance party produced in tandem with some of New York’s most innovative visual and conceptual artists.

With the maiden installation of “Somebody Arted In Here!,” Sweeney extends an invitation to painter Peter Doig, a native Scotsman raised in Trinidad and Canada. His exclusive installation for Santos Party House is entitled “Basement Bacchanal” and is influenced by Caribbean wall treatments. The piece will be divided into sections according to the placement of the Santos cinder-block walls. Doig will also be DJing at the launch party on February 26 at 11pm, alongside Brian Degraw of Gang Gang Dance, Thomas Bullock of A.R.E. Weapons and Rub N Tug, and Sweeney himself, with DJ Harvey manning the upstairs level.

Peter Doig’s otherworldly paintings have been exhibited internationally at major institutions to great acclaim. He is one of the most sought after contemporary artists (with paintings fetching auction prices of over 10 million dollars). Santos is pleased to have Doig on board for the first iteration of this new artist project. To commemorate the ‘Bacchanal Basement,” Doig will be compiling a limited-edition Soca mixtape CD with his own cover art design, that will be distributed, free of charge, to the first 300 launch party attendees.

“Somebody Arted In Here!” is a convergence of visual art, music, and movement, as executed by the most innovative and capable minds in those fields. New York City thrives on the creative energy of these individuals, and Santos Party House is proud to give their work a living and breathing home - something beyond, beneath, and besides a museum or traditional gallery. James Dewitt Yancey, known to music lovers as J. Dilla or Jay Dee, became a prominent force in production as a part of the seminal hip-hop group Slum Village. With a reputation for magnifying spacious vintage samples with well-measured drums, he became a favorite producer of A Tribe Called Quest, Erykah Badu, Talib Kweli, De La Soul, as well as a member of the Soulquarians supergroup (alongside Questlove). His solo career yielded the amazing Donuts series, as well as a cult favorite duet project with the producer Madlib (entitled JayLib), whose style was influenced directly by Dilla's.

Dilla's untimely death in 2006 left the hip-hop world grieving and amiss for his work. To this day artists are finding new and creative ways of using his distinct production, resulting in a posthumous career that rivals 2pac's. As a tribute to this legend, Rare Form have put together the annual Donuts Are Forever parties, with proceeds going to the J Dilla Foundation which supports inner-city music education and provides scholarships for the underprivileged. Providing music will be New York's turntable king Rich Medina, the production renaissance man DJ Spinna, and many more, each a talented DJ and selector in her/his own right.

There is much talk now of the collective malaise fermenting around apocalypse theories, building to a climax due 12/21/2012, which has been exploited for the sake of books, movies, marketing, music, just about everything except for an ill post-goth dance party. To fill the void (void-house?) comes S!CK, in tandem with the Sentimentalist Magazine, postulating a bill with magick beats and okkult sound trickery. White Ring headlines with their droned-out nether realm resonances punctuated with spare drums. Von Haze's textured and unnerving synth-based nightmare pop is the perfect compliment to our urban deathscape. Rough Trade's Blissed Out employ haunting keyboards and demented samples propelled by percussion that nods to grime and drum 'n bass. Also taking place will be one of the infamous"okkult performances" of Shams, a dark dance pioneer known for coining the term "witch-house," whose music is the devious perversion of minimalism, early house, and modern pop. Andrew W.K. sat down with Asylum not too long ago, and discussed numerous topics including zombies, food, and the bizarre discotheque that he calls home.

The interior of Andrew W.K.'s rock and dance club Santos Party House, just south of Houston Street in Manhattan, is black.

Totally black.

It is designed, W.K. says, to literally resemble outer space, so that the walls cannot be seen by the naked eye before you smash into them.

The speakers inside Santos are ludicrous too. There are dozens of them, and they are everywhere. They look like space ship rocket boosters. They all work, incidentally. And they are loud.

Essentially Santos is a blank party canvas. A sheet of black paper on which to bleed, puke and sweat, to taste. It is precisely the kind of place Andrew W.K. should call home. The kind of place that Toys R'Us would sell as a playset to accompany an Andrew W.K. action figure (which, by the way, does exist).

ROSETTA
While most post-hardcore groups put an emphasis on the "post" aspect of their sound, Rosetta retains a rawness and grit that should endear them to punks and deter pussies. They make healthy use of spaced-out arpeggiations without getting syrupy, and an unrelentingly growling vocal melts over the groove without sounding mismatched.

FIGHT AMP
Blackwood, New Jersey's Fight Amp provides an irreverent punk take on the grooves pioneered by Southern groups like Crowbar and Corrosion of Conformity. Pitchfork gave some shine to their 2008 release Hungry for Nothing, saying "This is no mere garage punk; this is a finely tuned assault with booming, modern production. It's not 'dope, guns, and fucking in the streets,' but it's pretty fucking dope."

EAST OF THE WALL
The progressive odes by East Of The Wall are a whirlwind of styles centered around brutal odd-time metal. The New Jersey group makes use of sharp juxtaposition as well as smooth transitions and style synthesis, producing a mesmerizingly bizarre experience that rivals any leader in the field of math metal.

If we are to take Proverbs at its word that “Truth stands the test of time,” then the Friday night reOPENed party at Santos Party House is most certainly the truth. When OPEN became reOPENed in January 2010, many were understandably nervous about the overhaul of a staple residency, but those worries were soothed when the lauded producer Just Blaze took the headlining DJ slot, boosting attendance and ushering in a bright new era for New York City nightlife. With him came DJ Soul, an underground mixtape maestro and favorite spinner of hip-hop’s industry elite. DJ Gravy and Max Glazer (Federation Sound) of the Rice & Peas crew with their inimitable MC Micro Don remain holding down the basement level, which has proven time and time again to be Manhattan’s favorite weekly spot for modern Caribbean music. The Godfathers, Legendary UK Rock

In 1985, when the guitar in British popular music was nearing extinction, Peter and Chris Coyne formed The Godfathers, a bold foil to the prevailing trends. They built their sound upon searing blues guitar riffs and crisp back beats, a style that was decidedly working-class and geared towards raucous pubs. They built their first LP Hit By Hit around singles they had released independently, resulting in worldwide acclaim and a deal with Epic Records. As a primary influencer of the dominant Britpop of the 1990’s, The Godfathers are one of the most important rock bands in the history of the UK, thus their dissolution in 2000 gave way to an inevitable reconstitution in 2008. Santos is excited to bear witness as this legendary outfit expands its legacy.

JANKA NABAY & THE BUBU GANG
African music, by co-opting aspects of electronica, hip-hop and reggae, is finally making some headway in the West, but the sounds by Ahmed Janka Nabay are more predecessor than Afro-pop pastiche. Nabay created his style in Freetown during the Sierra Leonean civil war, moderinizing the traditional style of bubu (normally played by large wind ensembles) with Western instrumentation rather than aesthetics, namely an old school digital keyboard that he plays alongside bamboo shoots and carburetor pipes. As a war refuser, he uses his lyrics promote humanitarianism, pacifism and feminism using a combination of English and Krio, sung in nimble West African harmonies, chants and falsettos.

During the war, rebels made use of his music to lure captives, and even forced Nabay to perform under duress. The pan-West African ECOMOG coalition, in turn, suspected him of siding with the rebels and nearly gunned him down. He fled to Philadelphia in the 90's, working at a Crown Fried Chicken as he grew a cult following in the US. In 2010, he moved to New York City to focus on music, and formed Janka Nabay and the Bubu Gang featuring members of Gang Gang Dance, Skeletons, Starring and Zs.

SAADI
While the most prominent rhythmic passages of Boshra AlSaadi's are strictly reggae, her harmonic sensibility is influenced by a variety of sources, be they melodramatic pop or folk rock. Her concise arrangements allow for the textures in her production to shine through, as well as her silky voice and evocative lyrics. She has collaborated with the likes of Lemonade, Pupa Bajah (Dry Eye Crew) and Janka Nabay.

BRENMAR
A Brooklynite by way of Chicago, Brenmar produces tracks of percussive house jams inflected by hip-hop, R&B, pop and bounce. XLR8R drafted him for an official podcast and he is often sought out for remixes. By refusing to follow trends in commercial house, he has preserved the authenticity of his genre.

A tradition that began two years ago with Q-Tip and Rich Medina is now a defining staple of New York City nightlife. The weekly party has twice won the “Best Party” title in the Paper Magazine Nightlife Awards, with an additional nomination, and on New Year’s Eve it is returning from a short hiatus during which the phones at Santos Party House were perpetually ringing with pleas for its return. In early 2010, Grammy-winning producer Just Blaze took the party’s reigns, supported by a favorite selector of the hip-hop elite (as well as the New York Knicks), DJ Soul. The two have been slaying the upstairs level of Santos every Friday with a prime selection of hip-hop, soul music, disco, house music, as well as some unexpected twists. The downstairs level has an identity all its own, focused on the best in Caribbean music including reggae, soca, dancehall, reggaeton, reggaetronica and more. Responsible for this invincible mix are DJ Gravy, publisher of leading Caribbean lifestyle website Largeup.com as well as NYC’s most notorious reggae mixtapes, Max Glazer, a skilled Federation Sound producer and selector whose Vybz Kartel track “Whine” is getting ubiquitous radio spins, and their MC Micro Don.

To ring in 2011, reOPENed has upped the ante by adding two living legends to the bill. Clark Kent, the legendary producer who has laid tracks for The Notorious B.I.G. (including Junior M.A.F.I.A.’s classic “Player’s Anthem”), Slick Rick, The Fugees, Rakim, Skillz, and is cited by Jay-Z as a proponent in his rise to fame. Also on the bill is radio legend Stretch Armstrong, who is known as co-host of the newly resurrected “Stretch & Bobbito Show” alongside Bobbito Garcia throughout the 90’s. The two are credited with breaking numerous hip-hop giants including The Notorious B.I.G., KMD/MF DOOM, The Wu-Tang Clan and Talib Kweli, before Stretch moved on to hosting his own slot on Hot 97 and almost single-handedly protecting real hip-hop from going completely pop. Joining the basement bashment will be Jasmine Solano, emerging rapper, DJ, and recipient of the Urban Music Award for Best Female Radio Personality, alongside the inimitable Nire of the Married To The Mob posse.

Or take Spencer Sweeney, a talented painter whose work fetchingly echoes a variety of sources, from Odilon Redon and Francis Picabia to Larry Rivers and Martin Kippenberger. Mr. Sweeney, also a sometime D.J., used to play keyboards and guitar in the short-lived band Actress, and owns the quintessentially hip nightclub Santos Party House on the edge of Chinatown. For his last exhibition, a year ago at Gavin Brown’s Enterprise, he moved into the gallery lock, stock and easel for the duration, taking everything — his messy creative process, his messy range of ideas about what that is, his messy bed — with him.

“Luckily, I’m not called upon to describe myself too often,” Mr. Sweeney said. “It does happen when we’re trying to find managers for the club, and they’ll say, ‘What are you guys?’ It’s not a good sign. The thing for us is to remain open to being anything and, hopefully, everything.”

Rather than putting forth anything patchily ambitious or cameo-saturated *ahem*, Big Boi marshalled a record in which each detail was executed creatively and effectively. He heavily supervised the production which recalls the early 90's when people still thought it worthwhile to create layered instrumentation for hip-hop and R&B. Accordingly, most of the tracks are by Organized Noize, the ATL team behind much of the OutKast discography, plus Mr. DJ, André 3000, and even Lil' Jon getting all grown folks with the beat for "Hustle Blood." Lyrically, Big maintains interesting syncopation throughout, employs his characteristically dense rhyme schemes, and hits on a variety of topics including his favorite, unwanted pregnancy. Honorable mention: Sufjan Stevens, Das Racist two times, and Octopus Project.

For fans of Suicidal Tendencies, Madball and Merciful Fate. Don't sleep if you like hardcore in any way, shape or form.

As one third of Oakland experimental dance collective Triangle, Amanda Warner was a leading figure in the west coast alternative and indie scenes. In 2008, she made the decision to pursue songwriting in New York City, where she met Peter Wade with whom she formed MNDR, an outlet for poppier ideas inflected by noise music and krautrock. In 2010, a break came in the form of a featured vocal slot alongside Q-Tip on Mark Ronson’s smash “Bang Bang Bang,” and the media immediately took notice of Warner’s magneticism. Profiles in Radar, The Fader, Esquire and virtually every reputable music publication followed, and soon MNDR’s “Fade To Black” and “C.L.U.B.” became discotheque favorites in their own right.

PSYCHOBUILDINGS

A trio that includes members of Small Black and Silk Flowers, Psychobuildings have endless resources to draw from as they craft their bizarre synth pop. Irreverent words and disco-inspired bass complete the equation, resulting in an infectious sound that has twice been featured by Pitchfork Media’s “Forkcast.”

ZAMBRI

The intense noisy progressive pop created by Zambri is as shimmering as it is foreboding. They have addictive, approachable melodies as well as perplexing production and complex song constructions that reward the listener’s curiosity. The 80’s are strong with this female duet, as hints of The Cure, Kate Bush, and Giorgio Moroder often noticeable, yet Zambri’s ambition and use of sonic wizardry put them amongst the most forward thinking artists in New York City.

Along with experimental sound artist and producer Bruno Coviello, formerly of Astor and Cove Brothers, she weaves haunting darkwave tapestries bolstered by an electric drum pad, backing tracks nodding to the minimalistic soundtrack music of the 80's, and full-bodied baritone vocals.

CAVEMAN
The five generously talented members of Caveman have cultivated an extraordinary chemistry, allowing them to create remarkably cohesive Americana grooves propelled by layers of shoegaze-inspired effects. The underground music scene has high expectations of the group, which features members of pop outfits Elefant and the Subjects, and they continue to win over crowds with each outing. WNYC and The Fader have both endorsed the band’s keynote track “Decide,” and Paper Trail called their performance, “pretty tight, polished set that would stop you in your tracks on Bedford Avenue if you heard it coming out of a record shop.”

On September 19, 2010, former Snot and Divine Heresy vocalist Tommy “Vext” Cummings was attacked with a crowbar by his strung out brother. He was left with arm and skull fractures, as well as massive internal bleeding that resulted in the loss of his spleen. Given Vext’s notable physical stature, his wounds are healing quickly and he is in physical therapy, but he still faces hospitable bills that total $75,000-80,000. Hoping to put a dent in this mountainous sum, his friends in the world of music have put together a benefit to be held at Santos Party House on the afternoon of November 28.

Headlining the night will be God Forbid, known as New Jersey’s champions of metalcore, whose lead guitarist Doc Coyle is currently writing and recording a forthcoming project with Vext. God Forbid are Ozzfest veterans who have played alongside Slayer, Lamb of God, Cannibal Corpse, Children of Bodom, Andrew W.K., Marylin Manson, and As I Lay Dying. Also rocking the two-floor event are shred zealots Mutiny Withn, apocalyptic party moshers Dead Men Dreaming and the impetuous hardcore prankster franchise Timeless. Human Decline will be doling out traditional hardcore riffage, Empyreon will bring their driving progressive death metal arsenal, The Judas Syndrome will be providing a thrash metal blow to the audience’s collective face, and A Great Day To Die will be opening up with with the sinister death grooves. All box office proceeds will be donated to Vext’s recovery, alongside the efforts of every artist and venue staff member for the night.

The explosive Nippon punk of Peelander-Z is swirled with xylophones and harmonies known for winning over the most jaded rock scenesters in the city. Friendly and light at first glance, the riot grrl-inspired pop of Japanese trio Tsu Shi Ma Mi Re has undeniable range thanks to their superior musicianship. They move from tight ska riffs to slow indie grooves without hesitation, and lay it on heavy with vocal harmonies and ambitious melodies.

Dear Friends,

Yesterday was one for the books at Santos Party House. We had been working since the morning in preparation for the 20th anniversary celebration of the legendary record label Ninja Tune, in addition to the string of amazing Halloween events we had been working on for months. At around 9:15pm, the mounting excitement was crushed when the NYPD entered into the club and informed us that we were to cease operations until further notice. Needless to say, we were shocked.

The summons we received lists a few minor incidents that occurred months
ago for the most part, all involving people not under the direct employ of the club. While many of the allegations listed in the order are simply untrue, we take most offense to the argument that SPH promotes behavior that causes “ irreparable harm to the City of New York, its residents and visitors.” Our intentions are exactly the opposite. We are a mom-and-pop business that strives to maintain the cultural and creative traditions that make this city such a miracle. SPH does not condone any illegal activity and has always gone above and beyond recommended security protocol to ensure a safe environment for patrons and staff. Spontaneously closing an independent business that has continuously cooperated with authorities (on one of the most profitable weekends of the year) is not the answer. It’ s absolutely ridiculous. Blackbookmag.com succinctly wrote today, “ Has anybody been in Madison Square Garden during a concert? Drugs are in schools, playgrounds, offices, parks and, quite possibly, every building—commercial or residential—in town. Nobody thinks of closing these places down, only the clubs.” While we understand that the NYPD is just doing its job, we hope that moving forward we can find a way to work together to attain the same goals.

We have a hearing on Monday and are confident that we will be cleared of any wrongdoing and will resume business as usual shortly. Until then, we encourage our allies in nightlife to remain vigilant and protect your businesses. We are deeply appreciative of the outpouring of support in the press and on the internet. The Voluptuous Horrors of Karen Black with Samoa and Hussle Club

Kembra Pfahler created The Voluptuous Horrors of Karen Black in 1990 as the musical wing of her assault on prevailing culture. Her love for shock and horror are blended with an urbanite punk's eye for decaying civilization and packaged within a fleshed out thrash punk. Her sets make heavy use of visuals, often encompassing performances pieces and sculpture, including her famous "Wall of Vagina" (exactly what it sounds like), as well as moments of religious and moral transgression. Those fond of Gwar, the Misfits, or Siouxsee and the Banshees will find a lot to love here. On October 31st, she will be celebrating the release of her new album Home of the Brave, which takes a look at the political climate with a traditional Voluptuous Horrors slant.

Pfahler's proclivities towards the dark and incorporeal came from the stories told by her imaginative grandmother and a youthful fascination with horror films. A career in underground horror and fetish films followed, but the Voluptuous Horrors would live on as her vehicle for more notorious projects, including performance arts installations at Deitch Projects and the Whitney Biennial. Her plans for Halloween 2010 are grandiose to say the least, and we can't think of a better way to ring in the holiday.

HUSSLE CLUB
Prince Terrence is well known to those in the know thanks to his gigs drumming for Major Lazer, Santigold, Spank Rock, and Heartsrevolution, but in 2009 he announced his own solo endeavor that promises to make comparable waves all its own. Hussle Club is danceable post-punk informed by Terrence's life in the Detroit projects, Louisville, the Big Apple, and the circus known as the music industry. Terrence is the sole instrumentalist for the Hussle Club recordings, making him a savvy frontman for the project's fiery live sets.

Santos resident DJ Just Blaze gave a heavily syndicated interview to Mikey Fresh (read it in Vibe) in which he discussed producing the Eminem and Lil' Wayne collaboration, seeking advice from Wu-Tang's RZA, and some interesting new projects, including a TV show and producing for the Def Jam Rap Star video game.

"There’s something else video game and music related that I might be working on. It’s so early, though—we’ve only been two conversations about it. But it will probably have a lot of haters upset, again,” Just tells VIBE with a chuckle, from behind his new console. “I’m also working on a TV show. It’s not just a pitch thing—we’re almost done shooting. I took the downtime I had from making music to do something different, jump on the small screen a little bit."

Legendary nightlife artisans Rob Roth and Chi Chi Valenti are returning to Santos with the third installment of their techno-glam party, CLICK + DRAG 3.2: AGE OF AQUARIUS. The world of pan-sexual cyberpunks is alight with positive buzz, and the city's magazine dedicated to leisure, TimeOut New York, has climbed aboard the bandwagon, publishing an interview with Roth in their latest issue addressing how times have changed since he pioneered the party's aesthetic.

Do you think Click + Drag still has vitality in an era when cyberness is a part of everyday life?
Early on, we were all about the relationships between technology and fetishism and all that; it was still a new concept. Now, forget it. It’s happened. But at the core, we actually were always about change and about the future, and about bringing together all these subsets of the underground—the leather community, Radikal Faeries, transvestites and the rest. Plus, people really wanted us to do the party—we kind of had no choice!

An intricate production with a simple idea, Bowie Ball is “The Ultimate Glam Rock Revolution,” a tribute to Ziggy Stardust and to the era of space-age pan-sexual liberation. The event is assembled by Deryck Todd, ambassador of nightlife and fashion, has been throwing this legendary party yearly and it has been declared a “rousing success” by the Village Voice, and according to the New York Press, “resurrected old New York.” The line-up features nightlife’s most influential DJ’s, live music, cabaret performances, glam make-up and hair make overs, costume contest and a screening of The Hunger at 8pm. As you already know, our Friday night reOPENed party has been tearing it up since 2008 when Q-Tip held the reigns, and with the creative visionary Just Blaze as the current headlining DJ it remains the premier party in the city. Once again the diverse, cross-genre gathering has been nominated by Paper Magazine as the "Best Party" for the Sixth Annual Nightlife Awards, alongside our Wednesday party Que Bajo?!.

This news comes alongside two exciting new releases. The top selling hip-hop album, which monopolized the #1 spot for months hip-hop, is Eminem's Recovery album. As of a few days ago it was supplanted by Lil Wayne's I Am Not A Human Being. That helps to explain the success of the newest single off of Recovery, "No Love" by Eminem featuring Lil' Wayne produced by Santos resident Just Blaze. Just can be seen prominently in the video putting in work behind the boards and sangin' the chorus. See below:

You might know Vybz Kartel as one of the most important vocailsts in dancehall and modern reggae, or for his notable collaborations with Mavado, Beenie Man, The Alliance, and the recent Major Lazer project for which he lent his vocals to the international smash hit "Pon De Floor." He has received numerous Caribbean music awards, including EME's "Songwriter/Lyricist of the Year" award in 2009 and 2010. His most recent offering "White Wine" features production by the reOPENed party's Max Glazer of the Federation Sound crew.

The Great White North’s Great White Hope in the techno world is Felix Cartal, whose bassy and granula textures make his style unmistakable. His meteoric rise of Felix Cartal began in 2007 when he burst out the gate with official remixes for Moving Units and Dragonette, and following round of unofficial remixes for MSTRKFRFT and Ashlee Simpson landed him official slots on Dim Mak releases. He has been a key member of that imprint since, bringing a well-honed ear for percussive techhouse despite only being in the limelight for a few years. Violent Frequency proclaimed of his 2010 full-length solo LP Popular Music, “Underneath all of that glitter and glam, Felix Cartal is a tried and true Electronic artist. With 'Popular Music,' it’s plain to see that this guy is here to stay.” At Santos he will be celebrating the release of his single "Love."

SOUND OF STEREO
The style of Sound of Stereo can be summed up as a crash course in house music; elements of electro, disco, italo, and techno can be heard throughout. Samples are used liberally as well, as they are also a sleek remix team. This will be the first date of their October tour!

To think there are people in this metropolis that aren't going out regularly is depressing, and a bit insulting to the ethic of New York City. But the sad reality is that, despite the strenous efforts of musicians, artists, DJ's, club managers, transit workers, buggy drivers, mood enhancers and drunk people, many are missing out on the most important cultural moments of their time. Here at Santos we pride ourselves in making those moments happen with the help of the city's most creative individuals. Here are some recent examples of the shit that's been going down.

True, not enough New Yorkers are partying. And as The Atlantic's Ricardo Guiterrez points out, the malaise is spreading to those of us who do go out. Of course, now it's a matter of knowing where to go, and where the actual fun people are. That's why we're not mad at the magazine for letting the people know what time it is:

The closest I came to experiencing an exception was at Santos Party House about a month ago. It was a disco night, a mostly gay crowd and everyone was dancing and having a good time. If only that could be the norm here and not the exception because I've been to too many parties where people just stand around and talk, where the music is too hip and precious to risk looking uncool to.

EFTERKLANG
Copenhagen natives Efterklang create alternative pop with an epic, spacious scope. Harmonically ambitious, the songs contain nods towards minimalism and choral music, all while remaining catchy and infectious. They are one of Denmark’s most prominent musical acts, and their critically acclaimed sophomore LP Parades (released on the bands own Rumraket imprint) was performed live with The Danish National Chamber Orchestra. In 2010 they released Magic Chairs (4AD) to critical praise; the Guardian says, “It's emotional music, full of subtle tension and lurking drama.”

BUKE & GASS
The huge sound of this Brooklyn duo is thanks to the two homemade stringed instruments (the Buke and the Gass) that are their namesake. The sound reflects their very analogue inventiveness, driving and unpredictable with a bluesy, classic psychedelic tendency and soaring harmonized vocals. The Village Voice declares that their debut album Riposte "manages to recreate the cyclone of activity involved in watching these two mad scientists do their decidedly one-of-a-kind thing."

XYLOS
Xylos is a pop ensemble that plays full, bright arrangements that move from twee to shoegaze to electronica, a style that sways from jarring to jocular. Their debut EP Bedrooms was produced by Britt Myers, who has run the boards for Chairlift and Yeasayer.

ARPLINE
As quickly as they lull you with nebular synth textures and evocative lyrics, they shatter the comfort zone with off-kilter rhythms. ArpLine earns their psychedelia stripes bravely pushing the limits of intellectual pop. They have played alongside Bear In Heaven, Electric Tickle Machine, Oh No Ono, and Dinowalrus. Glide Magazine called their 2010 album Travel Book "your electronica-pop soundtrack to the summer."

Aronow is the creative director and cofounder of the essential RCRD LBL blog that specializes in breaking new free music by hand selected artists. John Dwyer had established himself as aleader in Providence's underground rock scene by the time he moved to San Francisco in the late 90's to front and play guitar for several more bands. His resume includes cult Frisco outfits like Pink and Brown, Coachwhips, and The Hospitals, stretching back to include Rhode Island favorites Landed. Thee Oh Sees was created as his solo project, yet another outlet for his relentless productivity, but ended up becoming his most well known and prolific project. Over the project's 13 year existence it has expanded into a full quartet with a furious, noise-punk sensibility reigned in by tight songwriting. Their 2010 LP Warm Slime, latest in a discography boasting about 24 releases, was produced by Chris Woodhouse (Erase Eratta, FM Knives).

SEX BEET
Backed by Vice, Neu Magazine, and the blogosphere, London’s Sex Beet are a natural remedy for indie rock’s withering libido. Their songs are raw garage punk jams heavy on surf riffs and jagged synths. The Weareinvolvedblog called them “the perfect soundtrack for a modern beer fueled beach party.” With tracks like ”Nice Hair/Nice Titties,” Sex Beet make charged rock for the vegetably active.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY
Happy Birthday are an emerging talent thanks to delicately arranged vintage garage-pop tunes mixed with post-punk riffs and songwriting. Originally formed as a one-off performance, they were signed to Sub Pop a few months after independently releasing their first LP.

FERGUS & GERONIMO
The duo of Andrew Savage and Jason Kelly are members of Teenage Cool Kids, and formed Fergus & Geronimo as an off-shoot. Their music encapsulates the competing sounds of the 50’s, namely soul music and garage rock. Initial leaks made waves in the Texas indie scene, and they released three singles in 2009 all to critical praise. They have plaid alongside Wild Beasts, Tyvek, Wavves and Harlem. Stereogum, Fader, and BrooklynVegan have all fallen in love with their Motown influenced sound.

They've gotten together with some old friends (Diplo, the Mad Decent crew, Mishka, Hima Suri's own Greedhead Ent) to put together a new mixtape, Sit Down, Man, the follow-up to Shut Up, Dude which prompted Pitchfork to declare them "the truth." We will be celebrating the new tape's release on Thursday with a bulletproof lineup of acts and tunes. It's going to be neo-Wild Style up in here.

DAS RACIST
Currently the most sought-after force in experimental hip-hop, Das Racist is a trio that eschews any posturing whatsoever in lieu of confronting the truth, however brutal or hilarious it may be, on top of bizarre electro production. Their breakout single "Combination Pizza Hut and Taco Bell" has become rap music's most successful foray into absurdism. But the real meat of their lyrical repertoire are the densely constructed and prophetic commentaries on imperialism in the Gawker era, as well as hilarious multi-syllabic thought trains as unpredictable as the subways for which they are written.

MALUCA
With commercial interests attempting to slip into every crack of culture, Maluca remains as one of the rogues whose identity define her art. She spits saucy vocals and raps over futuristically textured production. Quickly after getting signed to Mad Decent, her single “El Tigeraso” set the indie world ablaze, landing her on the cover of Fader magazine and on stage with with Amanda Blank, Midnight Juggernauts, and Araabmuzik. She is a consider a pioneer of “speed meringue,” mixing traditional latin rhythms with the kinetic nature of indie dance.

KEEPAWAY
Keepaway build their songs the way the best hip-hop beats are made, by arranging undeniable grooves and samples into a heady post-pop composition. Their easy-going and approachable attitude buffers their intellectually dense music. The result is something groundbreaking yet reflective of the outsider pop that defines New York.

TECLA
Classically trained pianist Tecla Esposito is as well known for her work with others (like Gordon Voidwell) as she is for her brilliantly produced, snarky and witty electropop. She selects her band members cleverly, often perusing players that are emerging talents in their own right (including Will “Gordon Voidwell” Johnson and Guillermo E. Brown), resulting in seamless, passionate sets.

Of course, at the end of Jay-Z's set is when the night truly begins; from that point on the party moves on down to Santos with an all star cast of DJ's and producers that have worked extensively for these superstars. Alchemist laid tracks for Eminem's The Re-Up compilation and has been his tour DJ for the recent gigs. Just Blaze produced 3 tracks on Eminem's chart-topping Recovery, and has produced a slew of hits for Jay-Z including "The R.O.C.," "Girls Girls Girls," "Public Service Announcement" and "Show Me What You Got." Skibeatz is a golden era legend who is making waves in the scene with his new project Skibeatz & The Senseis. He is well known for producing "Dead Presidents (pt 2)" on Jay-Z's classic Reasonable Doubt. DJ Iron Lyon is a master turntable technician with an ear for chilled out breakbeat production and East Coast style MC. His new full-length album Time Capsule featuring guest appearances by C-Rayz Walz, Vordul Mega, and Craig G.

Amazing early reviews are rolling in for Darren Aronofsky's The Black Swan. Some of it was shot on location at your favorite discotheque with some very special extras. I haven't seen it yet, but from what they told us it's going to be something like Step Up 3D meets You Got Served. In the scene shot here, classically trained ballerina (Natalie Portman) lets off some steam at a New York nightclub, hijinx ensues and a good booty-shaking time is had by all!

On the real, some mind-fuckingly nutty shit probably goes down, but patrons should keep in mind that most of what happens is probably just pretend.

When people lament the passing of the “good old days” in New York City nightlife, the most common and valid concern is that the scene has become counterproductively exclusive. Today’s most creative DJ’s and tastemakers have been cornered into tiny lounges, hotel lobbies and gated venues with puny sound speakers no room for a dance floor. Santos, James Coppola (Full Time Friend) and Roxy Cottontail have devised the solution to this deficiency, bringing a big sound to an appropriately sizable venue. The aptly named NIGHT SCHOOL will instruct the masses on exactly what a party should be.

Headlining DJ Roxy Cottontail has long been the goddess of dance floor bangers and crafty promotion. Her prominent DJ career began in New York with the help of Justine D, and a year’s stint in Philly positioned her to help launch the careers of Diplo, Low Budget and Spankrock. As a vocalist her disco rap style has been featured by Larry Tee (in his “Let’s Make Nasty” club anthem), Armand Van Helden, Audioporno and more. But she is best known as one of New York’s canonical selectors, spinning beside the likes of DJ AM, Afrojack, Afrika Bambaataa, A-trak and more.

Opener Anton Glamb represents the Radical Outing posse dedicated to providing a fresh perspective towards urban culture that they sum up as “Totally original music. Totally original vibes.” Producer, remixer and MC and programmer, Glamb is a high output artist informed by the bizarre and obscure, framed within a DIY aesthetic. Also on the weekly bill is producer and DJ Brittiny “Bonnie Danger” Porter, understated turntable genius that lives to create forward-thinking playlists. Her refusal to overhype herself is compensated by her musical dexterity, making her the best kept secret in NYC’s nightlife, a true DJ’s DJ.

Also confirmed are DJ’s Tim Barber, Nick Relph, Rachel Chandler, Sweeney and Kuo will be hitting the decks themselves, and in the house will be MC’s Telfar, Shayne, Allan (The Legend). “Freedom Jams” are the name of the game, and the mammoth upstairs system at Santos will be blasting tunes to expand the mind and coax the will to dance. The party will also feature guest appearances, live sets, pop-up art sessions and oddball curators on a weekly basis. Weird is back with a vengeance.

There are a lot of CD's, DVD's and the like thrust into our hands by the end of the night from throngs of hungry artists that come through our doors to unwind and meet with fellow lovers of music. No doubt we appreciate all of these, despite varying their varying levels of quality. Let’s just say that your truly Zangief has become quite the connoisseur of autobiographical success documentaries by underground rappers. But every once in a while something appears on my desk that really makes my day. Sean Buchanan’s video for Andrew W.K.’s remix of “The Clapping Song” is a real gem that came in the form of a DVD with a fresh looking full color booklet and jewel case complete with an insert.

From the booklet:
“The purpose of this project is to research the production and editing process of a music video. I focused on the aspect of moving image and how it can support the artist’s musical style or musical talent. I created a video that reinforces the concepts and visual culture of the artist.

The artist in this instance is Andrew W.K. remixing the Gary Glitter version of ‘The Clapping Song.’ The original song by Shirley Ellis in 1965 has been remade countless times by other artists…. The beginning of the Andrew W.K. remix multiplies the percussive elements and cuts of the verses to create bouncy dance feeling. The remix eventually becomes increasingly chopped-up and abstracted to the point of absurdity. Andrew W.K. uses this remix as a bookend to his most recent collaboration titled DAMN! The Mixtape…..

My Video consists of four people dancing and playing instruments in a white room. The four models I used in the video wore strange masks so that the viewer can easily objectify them as characters that exist only for the video…. The video ends by juxtaposing a pull-out shot of their masks hung up on the wall with the pull-out shot of the pile of characters. This provides a conclusive end to the narrative and opens the video to interpretation of whether the characters actually exist or if they are some type of existential party god.”

Before his untimely departure in 2009, Adam “DJ AM” Goldstein gave to the world of music in every single way imaginable for a DJ, and then some. As a producer and remixer, he would put down keynote tracks for Jay-Z, Madonna, Beastie Boys, Weezer Three 6 Mafia, Dilated Peoples and many more. The diversity of his creative repertoire doesn’t end there, as his turntablism and scratching abilities were crucial to the sounds of rock bands Papa Roach and Crazy Town, as well as Babyface, Lady Sovreign and Will Smith. He recorded two albums with Samantha Ronson and two mixtapes with Travis Barker. He was also co-owner of the beloved LAX nightclub, and Deckstar Management companies. After a life-long struggle against narcotics, Goldstein was taken from us by a run-in with drugs. Today, the DJ AM Memorial Fund carries on his legacy, raising funds and cultivating media partnerships to bolster the efforts of several organizations and projects combating addiction. On August 26, a coalition of the nation’s leading DJ’s will be gathering at Santos Party House to play a benefit for this noble foundation.

The line-up will feature corps d'elite DJ's in the genres that that DJ AM touched. Superproducers DJ Premier and Clark Kent represent hip-hop along with tastemakers Stretch Armstrong and DJ Riz. Nightlife royalty Mark Ronson will be in the house, reminding us what we loved about the eclecticism that DJ AM represents. Eli Escobar, Jus Ske, Jesse Marco and Rockaton are all leaders in streetwise electro and urban sounds, putting it down for the real heads.

One of the originators of "Dark Samba," Calegari draws his sound from modern electronica as well as his musical heritage.

Horse Meat Disco is a DJ collective operating out of Eagle London, who specialize in fringe disco for the lifers. Heavily endorsed by James Murphy (LCD Soundsystem), they dig deep into the specialty forms of dance music, heavily featuring dub, italo and electro-funk. For the past two years, the world of heavy New York City music has experienced somewhat of a revival thanks to a group of hungry upstarts known as Chronic Youth. The collective’s members Fred Miketa, David Castillo, Brian Ponto, Gavin O’Connor and Cameron Octigan, shared a love for all things brutal, and went to work creating an events production company that proliferated the best in abrasive underground music. In 2009 they were responsible for booking and DJ’ing some of New York’s most memorable moments in live music, presenting groups like Rorschach and 108 at Santos Party House, Cannabis Corpse and Black Cobra at the Charleston, all the while forming partnerships with Converse and Mishka. They orchestrated events for South by Southwest, Northside, and CMJ festivals.

In 2009, the boys launched ChronicYouth.com, their publication arm and a “celebration of brutal culture,” which instantly became a cult favorite for lovers of sub-terranean sounds. To herald the new site, they teamed up with Heatworm Press and put together a show with experimental noise idols NON (Boyd Rice), Prurient, gothic new wave outfit Cold Cave with spoken word performances by Genesis P-Orridge (Throbbing Gristle) and other geniuses of dark literature. Thus, Chronic Youth is defined not just by their teeming roster of metal and hardcore bands, but by a general affinity for the heaviest in music of all genres, be it psychedelic, industrial, punk or crossover thrash. Diverse? Sure. Commercial? Anything but.

Chronicyouth.com has been a dominant cultural hub for a year now, supplying their loyal followers with music, mixtapes, news, features, photos, merch, giveaways and interviews. Perhaps some of this success can be attributed to their frank writing style (“On the plus side, the vocalist yells ‘bitch.’ On the negative side, it might be about losing a girlfriend or some shit. Which is lame.”), but for those in the know, what separates ChronicYouth from all the other cats putting on shows and writing is one thing: taste. In separating the wheat from the chaff, no one is more brutal. On August 22nd 2010, they’re putting their taste-making chops on the line with an all-out massacre, 13 bands, with Rorschach and the CY boys themselves on the decks, not to mention the 2nd annual chug contest to knock out those left standing from the pit. Anyone with even a moderate interest in the future of heavy music should not miss this opportunity to support a revolution in progress.

Dubbed "Best DJ Night" at Paper Magazine's 4th Annual Nightlife Awards, reOPENed has earned the reputation for being the most important Friday night in the Five Boroughs for the masses to get down. From movie stars to breakdancers to workplace warriors of every collar, the crowd is a beautiful representation of New York City's soul, and the music is engineered accordingly. Upstairs is JUST BLAZE, the multi-platinum producer and remixer who has laid tracks for Jay-Z, Busta Rhymes, Beastie Boys, Mariah Carey, MF DOOM, Janet Jackson, Jay Electronica, Kanye West and many more. While his sets do feature plenty of classic hip-hop, less obviously he makes liberal use of house music, soul classics, electronic disco, and just about anything with a serious beat. DJ SOUL is at his side, stepping it up with some ecclectic selections adored by his crowd of music moguls and celebrites. Meanwhile, DJ Gravy, Max Glazer and Micro Don establish the Friday night headquarters of Caribbean grooves in our downstairs level, spinning dancehall, soca, as well as classic reggae and reggaetronica.

The DJ team/production mob/record label known as Trouble & Bass are earning worldwide recognition as a diverse yet cohesive coalition of low-end professionals. They have a high-BPM, movement centric approach to the heavy and grimey spectra of dubstep and drum n' bass that fills rooms with people who battle the thick sounds with wild movement. Their membership spans the globe and includes AC Slater, Mikix The Cat, Star Eyes, Drop The Lime and Supra 1.

The UK-Based Breakage is a remix genius and producer of bass-centric electronica. He truly excels in tone selection, resulting in a rich sound that dominates the registers, bolstered by deft percussion lines. Also from London comes Zombie Disco Squad, a duo whose production is rooted in the origin sounds of Detroit house music, but who incorporate baile funk and hip-hop into their sound for a wider palette.

I'll be damned if that's not exactly what I crave every time I go out. The collaboration launches tomorrow at the Chip The Ripper show (too perfect), and we will be rocking two critically acclaimed falvors:

Santos Party House, the bi-level juggernaut dance club and performance space in downtown Manhattan, is looking for interns to help out with marketing, booking and administration. In its two years since opening, the venue has become internationally renowned, has won 19 nightlife awards (including Paper Magazine’s “Best Club” two years in a row, Zagat Survey’s “Best Dance Club” and The L Magazine’s “Best All-Around Everything Spot”), and has hosted marquee talent in nearly all genres of music, visual arts, cinema and more. We specialize in local talent as well as high-profile acts, and our industry connections include New York’s leading boutique storefronts as well giant media corporations. We are looking specifically for applicants whose passions include music (dance, local acts), nightlife, or marketing, and who exhibit adequate writing and general software skills.

Interns will learn about the mechanics and colorful personalities of venue administration, gain hands-on experience with top-tier events featuring preeminent talent, and receive complimentary entry to events and freebies. We will also offer college credit where appropriate.

The worst of his troubles is the excessive bail ($250,000) that keeps him incarcerated. New York's top lyricists are not standing for it, and have assembled a benefit to help with Walz' legal issues. Circa 95 is hosting a gigantic bill featuring the legendary Camp Lo, Tah Phrum da Bush, YC The Cynic, Area 54 anKillah Kal, and more surprise guests.

Tattoo Society, one of the nation's leading tattoo publications, is celebrating its fourth anniversary and holding the second annual Romel Awards honoring the country's best ink jockeys. This is a one-of-a-kind event that is fed by the collective, counter-cultural bond shared by each member of the inked community. The event will feature burlesque performances, S&M, and belly dancers.

The Anniversary party and Romel Awards, is the Oscars of the tattoo industry, which is one of the reasons we get attendants to the party from all over the globe. These awards are the readers choice award given to the most eye catching, best tattoos of the year.
