When the promotional duo FIXED sets up shop at Santos Party House, what occurs are some of the most unspeakably raucous parties New York City has ever witnessed. Those who were misfortunate enough to miss their Basement Jaxx or Boys Noize nights have hopefully overcome the guilt and shame, and will now have a chance to redeem themselves to their dancing shoes. Resident FIXED DJ’s Josh Houtkin and Dave Pianka are insidious masterminds of programming and promotion with knowledge of dancefloor dynamics unmatched by any other team in the metropolis. With a couple ill one-offs and a residency in the works for Santos Party House, they have hitched (fixed?) their star to the city’s most noted soundsystem.

AEROPLANE
Javelo, the Brussels-raised duo consisting of Stephen Fasano & Vito De Luca, were burning along nicely in Europe, their production grace shining on numerous 12” most notably “Spleen” and their famous remix of Thomas Sari’s “Tom Hustler.” But they were dissatisfied that their lifelong dedication to multi-instrumentalism had not taken a more prominent role. So they regrouped in 2007, naming themselves Aeroplane as a dig against the bass-obsessed electro scene and as a statement that airy, spaced-out composition was to be the key element of their sound.

Continuing their 12” spree, Aeroplane unleashed charting original jams, like the brutally infectious disco-psych smash “Pacific Air Race,” as well as heavily rotated official remixes for Grace Jones, MGMT and Sebastien Tellier to name a few. Their DJ sets are as seamlessly arranged as their tracks, blending in the best of house and electro with the more esoteric feels of balaeric, italo and trance. MixMag named them the #1 breakthrough of 2009, and they have become highly demanded festival acts, appearing at the gigantic European Creamfield and Parklife gatherings.

BLONDES
Zach Steinman and Sam Haar started Blondes as a way to fill the Oberlin College atmosphere with minimalistic analog electro set to untamed dancegrooves. XLR8R predicts, "With a spacey aesthetic and a loose, analog techno sound, their forthcoming EP on Merok will certainly be a hot commodity when it drops in the months ahead."

Hand-picked from the throbbing Dublin scene, Annie MacManus’ enthusiasm for dance music earned her a position heading publicity at the notorious Shine club, polishing her turntablism skills all the while. She eventually found herself on a number of London’s dance radio stations, and finally rocking a worldwide crowd on BBC’s Radio One. Her selection and hosting skills are featured on Annie Mac’s Mash Up, at the high-traffic Friday 7pm slot, as well as the Sunday evening BBC Switch show. The British press coyly praises her DJ sets as “rather hectic,” filled with high-octane revelry and slick moves, packing out venues like Fabric, Moles and numerous universities.

John "Jellybean" Benitez is nothing short of a forefather of discotheque selection, a multi-instrumental genius, and a chart-topping producer. After polishing his chops in the post-war South Bronx, he became a resident DJ at Studio 54 and the many genesis points of disco music. By the 80’s he was composing and producing artists like Debbie Harry, Sheena Easton, his erstwhile girlfriend Madonna’s first hits, as well as his own radio favorites “Sidewalk Talk” and “The Mexican,” which drew from his involvement with the cultures of hip-hop and latin music. Back when the word “re-mix” required a hyphen, he was one of the first to make an art form of retooling other musicians’ works. Some of the first official, label-sanctioned remixes were his, rehashing tracks by Afrika Bambaataa, Whitney Houston, The Pointer Sisters, Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney. In 2005 he was inducted into the Dance Music Hall of Fame, and he currently owns and operates his own recording, producing and publishing imprints. His DJ sets betray his eclectic aesthetic, a mixture of deep house, classic disco, hip-hop, latin, electro and pop music, together making for a frenetic experience in dance that is intrinsically New York City.

DANCE.HERE.TOO with PURE BEHROUZ tomorrow night!

This week, the mad house scientists Benny Soto and Rob Fernandez bring in BEHROUZ, known as the herald of NYC underground progressive groove. With spaced out sounds, minimal techno, and tribal beats, his craftmanship shines in his production as well as in his expert DJ sets. He is often seen alongside the likes of Danny Tenaglia, Carl Cox, and John Digweed.

Behrouz's global recognition in the house music industry can be attributed to the exceptional passion and perseverance he demonstrated years ago in his native San Francisco, a house music mecca. The long, epic sets he is famous for have been dubbed Pure Behrouz and the producers of Dance. Here. Too. know that you were born to dance so get down with the Purest at his fullest.

Dimitri from Paris, a Turkish-born Greek based in France, is an international king of mixing and house production. The foundation of his sound is early funk and cult film songs, from which he heavily samples for an authentically soulful sound. He was one of the first to popularize the art of the mixtape in Paris, and his legendary DJ sets would carry his career for decades. In 1996, his first studio album of original arrangements was named best album by the UK’s Mixmag. His most recent compilation Night Dubbin, a collaboration with The Idjut Boys, is a neo-disco take on R&B.

Danny Krivit was an original catalyst of the disco scene in its infancy. With a father who managed Chet Baker and founded the The Ninth Circle discotheque, Krivit was immersed in music from a young age. His career began with anointment by James Brown, and grew into an immortal DJ franchise. He contributed to several turning points in the history of disco, including the record pool at The Loft, the creation of the disco edit, as well as the 718 Sessions and Body and Soul residencies. Today he is a living bridge between the early disco scene and the mounting soulful house coup.

JUST BLAZE
The psychedelic sped-up vocals of Cam’Ron’s “Oh Boy.” Jay-Z’s dramatic “Interlude” becomes mainstream radio material. Ghostface Killah becomes an act big enough to rival the Wu-Tang Clan itself. What unites these moments, moments that asserted the prominence of true creativity, is production by Justin “JUST BLAZE” Smith. By having mastered turntablism, the art of sampling, percussion (on traps and machines), technology and the manipulation of musical climax, Just Blaze has become one of the most sought-after individuals in the industry, recognized as a living genius with an unique and influential style.

Having produced widely distributed hip-hop tracks since the mid-90’s Just Blaze grew to prominence during the turn of the millennium as half of the in-house production team at Roc-A-Fella records (the other being Kanye West). His addictive use of futuristic sounds combined with horn ensemble samples remixed into post-modern arrangements propelled the careers of many upstarts including Beanie Siegel, Freeway, Joe Budden, Fabolous, Kanye West and Cam’Ron’s Diplomats (Dipset). Aside from his Roc-A-Fella/Def Jam affiliates, he would go on to produce, remix and record tracks with urban music’s biggest artists including Busta Rhymes, Beastie Boys, Mariah Carey, MF DOOM, Lil’ Wayne, T.I., Mos Def… you name a charting rapper and he’s made a beat for them. He currently has collaborations in the works with Eminem and Jay Electronica. His use of sped-up vocal tracks has been co-opted as a hallmark of many other producers, most notably Kanye West, and more alternative acts like Blockhead and Passion Pit.

As a party DJ, he puts down the old school and golden age hip-hop mixed with soul classics that Friday at Santos is known for. But then he veers towards material that might surprise his boom-bap audience. A sly translation pulls the party into a set of deep house, electro, disco both classic and new, and pretty much anything with a proper beats. This open-minded and fearless approach to music selection offers clubbers a glimpse into the creative framework behind today’s most important producers.



DJ SOUL
One of the most trusted names in vinyl, DJ SOUL carved his space amidst hip-hop royalty since the late 90’s, rocking events and projects alongside Dead Prez, Bobbito and Stretch Armstrong. This era would also see him become a staple at high-profile industry parties for likes of Rawkus Records, Triple 5 Soul and Tommy Hilfiger, as well as private events for Russell Simmons, Naomi Campbell, Diddy, Mary J. Blige, Usher and baller status individuals of every stripe. In 2003 he hit the national airwaves on the one’s and two’s for the first season of Chappelle’s Show. His own beats and remixes for remain some of the most provocative arrangements available. As support for Just Blaze, he will be a reliable backbone, a learned selector, and a valuable member of the community.

It is said that when you’re doing the right thing, the universe conspires towards your success. Proving this theory true time and again is the Federation Sound System crew, who are point blank the most important organization bringing Caribbean music to the New York City. With an extended family that reps from here to Kingston, their core membership holds down the basement every Friday to a mixed crowd of well-traveled music lovers.

Leading the pack is DJ GRAVY, whose mix album series Iration Soundz has made him a lord of the underground, while he leverages a mainstream buzz due to his habit of collaborating on events with big names like Wayne Wonder, Assassin, Erin Wassin, Mr. Vegas, Ricky Powell and Sean Paul. He is a production guru, often working with the Fyre Dept team (Adam Deitch and Eric Krasno). Also manning the decks is MAX GLAZER, touring DJ for Rihanna and Baby Cham, who held down the Rice & Peas residency that united the reggae masses from Brooklyn to Jersey. Playboy has said of his Serious Times mix album, “The mellow vibes kick in and the buzz never fades.” The master of ceremonies is MICRO DON, whose booming voice coaxes the wildest movement from the multitudes.

Benny Soto and Rob Fernandez' DANCE.HERE.TOO set out to "bring back Saturday night." If reviving the weekend requires the most important minds in house and electronica spinning for a vibrant room boasting a thick, unpretentious crowd, then they've succeeded on a weekly basis since late November. This week they've got some fire talent this Friday, a full lineup of career party-rockers taking over both floors with some nicely articulated bass, warm mids and measured but assertive highs.

Hector Romero is a lifetime selector. While there's always a risk of a lackluster sets from producers and remixers who treat DJ sets like an obligatory chore, Romero has dedicated his life to assembling his repertoire and crafting taylor-made mixes specifically to the audience present. He is known as the operating management arm of Satosh Tomiie's Def Mix and SAW Recordings, and the international tastemaker for house, techno and electro heads. He rocks New York as easily as he does Ibiza, Spain, Italy, Greece or Canada. Those in attendance will have the pleasure of experiencing the artisanal sound experience.

Openers Sleepy & Boo are all about stripping the electronica scene of inflated pretention and filling it with a carefree, fun-obsessed attitude, not to mention the best in trance and techno. When not perusing their DJ monikers, aptly lifted from Super Mario, they are Basic NYC, grinding promoters of the city's illest deep house parties.

Live-mixing, effects and sinister synths define the unique sound of the four System Audible DJ’s. They’ve made a point to have “positivity” as their focal point, tailor-making their selections to the needs of any crowd.

The Stimulus Response team are all about the juxtaposition of the collective and individual, bringing their wild and diverse tastes and uniting them under a soulful house and techno umbrella. They have performed alongside legends such as Oscar G, Tedd Patterson, Richie Santana, and Peter Bailey.

Don't know about you, but I think it's about some time for secular fun. The Gregorian Calendar is most helpful for marking that one day when the entire globe decides that they will share 24 hours of reverie. Santos Party House put their weight on it, bringing in the infamous Made Event posse who engineer some of the city's most incredible nights, including the brilliant Respect residency in the summer of 2008. They've put together a wicked line-up to ring in the New Year in the spirit of unadulterated mirth.

LEE BURRIDGE

Many producer's are also disc jockeys and vice versa, but few have managed to excel at both roles with the same finesse as Lee Burridge. Beginning as a mobile disco operator in Great Britain, the early 90's saw his move to Hong Kong where his talent became a galvanizing force for the newborn disco scene. With a foundation in acid house that permeates throughout his eyebrow-raising brand of minimal techno, his original mixes and compositions are keystones for dance music aficionados, as is his Almost Anonymous imprint. A former member of the Tyrant Sound System with DJ Sasha and Craig Richards, Burridge has performed to unruly audiences in every corner of the world and on stage at Burning Man, the San Francisco Love Parade and Save The Cannibals. He has been on DJ Magazine's prestigious top 100 list consecutively since 1999. He told ClubPlanet what distinguished him from other Dj's....

Why do so many DJs look like they aren't having a good time? It's like they're made out of cardboard. This music is amazing. This job isn't a job. We can stay up late and even if you're a butt-ugly DJ, girls seem to pay attention to you. I guess that going out and dancing to music has always been a lot of fun for me and I find it very difficult to stand still when there's a track playing that I like, and I like all the tracks I play!

A true innovator never stops inventing. The hallmark of a creative spirit is that it continues to buck the status quo long after a name is made. Derrick May and François Kevorkian, together the COSMIC TWINS, establish monikers almost as quickly as they do musical tropes.

May (aka Mayday and Rhythim is Rythim) began his mythical career in Detroit during the late 80's alongside his high school friends, house/deep disco pioneers Juan Atkins and Kevin Saunderson. They called their brand of heavily synthesized, dancefloor-ready jams "techno" perhaps the only name that has truly stuck. His signature sub-genre is Hi-Tek Soul, the blending of modern American soul, blues and funk with the tambours of classic European electronica.

While May was transforming the the world of house, French ex-pat Francois K had already built up a rep for his home spun tape edits and high profile remixes. His take on Kraftwerk's "Tour De France" led to his official status as mixer on the group's 1986 album Electric Café, a role he would reprise for the likes of Depeche Mode and Erasure. His production and official remix credits include artists like Musique, U2, Goldfrappe, King Crimson, The Cure, Diana Ross, The Smiths and The Eurythmics. His incorporation of dub atmospherics into deep electronic disco is heard in the sets of DJ's the world over.

The Cosmic Twins recount their reunification (separated at astral birth) to TimeOut Magazine thus:

“When I first met François—I forget when it was, but it was a while back—it was at some little bar in London where he was deejaying just for fun,” May recalls. “But he was still really doing it, like François always does, experimenting and really getting into it. Of course, I knew about his history with Kraftwerk and everything else he’s done, and I went to him to introduce myself. I said, ‘François Kevorkian?’ And he said, [In a gruff voice] ‘Derrick May.…’ I was like, Wow, it’s so cool he knows who I am!” (When told this story, François simply says “Oh, c’mon—how would I not know who he was?”) It’s evident that the two make up a mutual-admiration society. “I’ve always been in awe of Derrick’s overall skills,” François says, “not just deejaying, but music making as well. He’s a very forward-thinking individual, and that shows in everything he does.”

Like the Tom Cruise in the Mission Impossible train scene, the OPEN party just refuses to fall off. Kamaal The Abstract hits the decks like a linebacker tackling a china display, rendering the scene an unrecognizable mass of ecstatic vibes. With foundation of hip-hop, soul and reggae that journeys into house, disco, jazz, and pop, the party is an accurate sonic depiction of the New York City culture.

This week we have A-Trak, his feet firmly planted both in electro and hip-hop, standing as one of the final guardians of turntablism for his generation. With a discography that boasts production for Lupe Fiasco and Kid Sister as well as too-famous-to-be-remix tracks for MSTRKRFT and Boys Noize, he has served as a human melting pot for multiple urban styles. Saturday: Amateur night, right? Immortalized in John Travolta movies and Misfits songs, it’s when everybody suits up and goes out. And you know what that means: Bad crowds, please-‘em-all music, and no space to dance.

Well the guys who brought Thursdays back are ready to perform Saturdays the same service.Rob Fernandez & Benny Soto, the promoters behind award-winning shindig Dance.Here.Now., are proud to present Dance.Here.Too.

A new concept in weekend fun that adapts the music-first DHN vibe to a party after which you don’t have to wake up for work.

“We realized that Saturday had fallen off the menu for a lot of people, and that’s just a waste of a night off,” says Rob.

“We wanted to create an alternative to the big, impersonal club experience that is more of a comingtogether of people that love music in a big way. We're taking back Saturday nights.,” says Benny.Set at Santos Party House – one of the city’s best dance-friendly venues with a custom sound system that defies ear fatigue – DHT will bring the focus back to you, your friends and the music. No nonsense, no door drama, no fuss.

With a wide-open music policy, featured DJs will run the gamut from house (American and European), toelectro, to uncategorizable. Already booked: Nervous Records artist/house legend Oscar G; the European“DJ’s DJ,” Danny Howells; and superstar-of-the-moment Laidback Luke. (Full list of dates below.) So next time you’re actually considering putting on your PJs and watching “Saturday Night Live,” set the DVR, get up, and get out to Santos and Dance.Here.Too.

ALAN BRAXE
Braxe scored a major hit in 1998 with "Music Sounds Better With You," a track co-written with Thomas Bangalter (of Daft Punk) and Benjamin Diamond under the name Stardust that reached number one on the United States Dance chart. He later formed Vulture Music, and continued to release singles under its imprint, including 2004's hit, "Rubicon". Recently he has become an in-demand remixer, contributing remixes to Goldfrapp, Röyksopp, Test Icicles, Annie, Shakedown, Kylie Minogue and Justice. Not to mention his successful collaborations with Kris Menace ("Lumberjack") and Fred Falke (“Palladium”).

Human Life, the musical project from Matt Wasley, Rachael Starr and Joshua Collins has created quite a buzz over the past year...
They all produce music. They all DJ. And they all sing (Matt and Rachael in the studio, Josh in the shower.) This talented trio hails from Los Angeles, California. There Human Life is part of a new breed of producers and DJs, inspired as much by sunshine and beaches as they are by the music heard coming from dark corners in downtown warehouses. Stealing their favorite elements (they’re not giving them back) from dance, indie rock, and global pop, HUMAN LIFE celebrates just that with cuts that range from dreamy pop to dancefloor storms.
