Das Racist SIT DOWN, MAN release party! With Maluca, Chairlift (DJing) and more!
Das Racist, Maluca, Keepaway and Tecla with Chairlift (DJ), hosted by Dallas Penn
FREE ENTRY
8:00 PM 21+
OPEN BAR 8-9PM
We've been jocking Das Racist since way back. Since dormitory ciphers, before Das Racist and Santos were even real things. We've been glad to have them all up in us time after time, and we fully support their mission: hella love for rap music, complete irreverence towards everything else. They've gotten together with some old friends (Diplo, the Mad Decent crew, Mishka, Hima Suri's own Greedhead Ent) to put together a new mixtape, Sit Down, Man, the follow-up to Shut Up, Dude which prompted Pitchfork to declare them "the truth." We will be celebrating the new tape's release on Thursday with a bulletproof lineup of acts and tunes. It's going to be neo-Wild Style up in here.
DAS RACIST
Currently the most sought-after force in experimental hip-hop, Das Racist is a trio that eschews any posturing whatsoever in lieu of confronting the truth, however brutal or hilarious it may be, on top of bizarre electro production. Their breakout single "Combination Pizza Hut and Taco Bell" has become rap music's most successful foray into absurdism. But the real meat of their lyrical repertoire are the densely constructed and prophetic commentaries on imperialism in the Gawker era, as well as hilarious multi-syllabic thought trains as unpredictable as the subways for which they are written.
MALUCA
With commercial interests attempting to slip into every crack of culture, Maluca remains as one of the rogues whose identity define her art. She spits saucy vocals and raps over futuristically textured production. Quickly after getting signed to Mad Decent, her single “El Tigeraso” set the indie world ablaze, landing her on the cover of Fader magazine and on stage with with Amanda Blank, Midnight Juggernauts, and Araabmuzik. She is a consider a pioneer of “speed meringue,” mixing traditional latin rhythms with the kinetic nature of indie dance.
KEEPAWAY
Keepaway build their songs the way the best hip-hop beats are made, by arranging undeniable grooves and samples into a heady post-pop composition. Their easy-going and approachable attitude buffers their intellectually dense music. The result is something groundbreaking yet reflective of the outsider pop that defines New York.
TECLA
Classically trained pianist Tecla Esposito is as well known for her work with others (like Gordon Voidwell) as she is for her brilliantly produced, snarky and witty electropop. She selects her band members cleverly, often perusing players that are emerging talents in their own right (including Will “Gordon Voidwell” Johnson and Guillermo E. Brown), resulting in seamless, passionate sets.

TOM TOM CLUB coming to Santos!
Thursday, October 14, 2010
TICKETS HERE
TOM TOM CLUB
The Talking Heads formed in 1975 as part of movement, alongside the likes of Arthur Russell and Peter Zummo, that aimed to blur contemporary pop with avant garde musics . The exploits of David Byrne’s legendary quartet are paramount in rock history, and the side project formed by his bassist Tina Weymouth and drummer Chris Frantz has built a comparable legacy. TOM TOM CLUB began officially in 1980 as a creative outlet for the married couple. Their tendency towards the funky and quirky has enjoyed widespread critical and commercial success; their self-titled debut featured “Genius Of Love” which would become one of the biggest jams of the decade. That track’s groove remains widely sampled and is a central component to numerous hits including Mariah Carey’s “Fantasy,” Grandmaster Flash’s “It’s Nasty” and Ziggy Marley’s “Tomorrow People (Hank Shocklee Remix).” The album was recorded in the Bahamas during the sessions for Grace Jones’ Nightclubbing, providing the opportunity to collaborate with some of the Caribbean’s most prominent session musicians including Ezikiah “Sticky” Thompson and the Sweetbreath Sisters. Thus, the Tom Tom Club represented revolutionary thinking in popular music while calling attention to kindred genres, reggae and the emerging hip-hop scene to be specific.
Frantz and Weymouth remained on board with the Talking Heads throughout the group’s duration, performing “Genius of Love” for the filming of Stop Making Sense. Still they remained open to collaboration with numerous prominent artists for small scale projects, including Jerry Harrison, k.d. lang Bonnie Raitt and the Happy Mondays. Their third album Boom Boom Chi Boom featured production by Arthur Baker. They played on the seminal Escape from New York tour alongside The Ramones, Debbie Harry and Jerry Harrison in 1990. The years between 1991 and 2000 saw no studio release from the group, though they continued to appear at pivotal moments in pop, including on the debut Gorillaz album. They released The Good The Bad And The Funky in 2000 on their independent Tip Top Music label in partnership with Rykodisc.
Family life has made a live concert by the Tom Tom Club a rare and incredible occasion. New York City was left yearning for more after they played to a sold out crowd of 5,000 alongside Devo and Dan Deacon two years ago. Now they are promoting their latest record, a live collection entitled Genius of Live. Santos Party House and its army of speakers welcomes them back with open arms. Time to bounce is right.
CARAVAN OF THIEVES
Headed up by vocalists Fuzz (Deep Banana Blackout, Tom Tom Club) and Carrie Sangiovanni, Caravan of Thieves have built a distinct sound that relies on acoustic arrangements and gypsy progressions. Their luscious harmonies are befitted by the virtuosic violin courtesy of Ben Dean, and the jazz-trained bass playing by Brian Hill. Their 2008 LP Bouquet was produced by Keith “Touch” Saunders, creative force behind numerous MTV and Sony projects.

KID SISTER
Melissa Young, between working a plethora of retail shifts and wedging a toehold in the world of cinema, spent her youth as a recognizable personality on the Chicago house scene. With a brother in the internationally famous DJ team Flosstradamus, stunning looks and wits beyond her years, she was positioned well for her own musical endeavors, though her approachable attitude distinguished her from the average club diva. In 2005 she began her rap career as Kid Sister, and in 2007 she had her first single “Control,” produced by XXXChange (Spank Rock) released through Fool’s Gold. Her 2009 album Ultraviolet on Downtown Records hit 20 on the AllmusicUS Top Rap Album charts, and featured many other genre-benders including Kanye West and Cee-Lo Green.
Kid Sister’s producers have also included A-Trak and Sinden, meaning her beats are friendly to clubgoers and hip-hop heads alike. “I think that even if you're making music that's a little bit different, everyone should be included,” Young says. “I used to be the fat girl, and I'm biracial, so I know how it feels to be something that's other-and it doesn't feel good. “ Neo-disco and rave textures are prominent in the mix, but Young’s raps take center stage. Lyrically understated and rhythmically inclined, her style could land her a spot as the third Cool Kid or the first Beastie Girl. She already owns the Chicago scene, and her headlining gig at Santos Party House will be a milestone for both her and New York’s hungry party people.
D.I.M.
No subgenre of dance music is safe from D.I.M.’s pan-electronica amalgamations. At the forefront are the drum and bass lines, hinting at dubstep, built beneath sly techno grooves. Few can match the finesse with which he switches up his drops, incorporating techno and trance elements, and keeping the dancefloor guessing. Boasting prominent remixes for Fischerspooner, Jape and Teenage Bad Girl, he currently is repping Berlin’s Boys Noize label.
Resident FIXED DJ’s Josh Houtkin and Dave Pianka are insidious masterminds of programming and promotion with knowledge of dancefloor dynamics unmatched by any other team in the metropolis. Now they're bringing us the weekly party New York has been waiting for, on the only sound system that can do it justice.

BlackBook's Steve Lewis: reOPENed Fridays (with Just Blaze) is "Joyous Mayhem"
It's a miracle that one can work in the nightlife industry for as long as Steve Lewis has while maintaining the faculty to speak about it coherently, let alone with the articulation and insight he displays in his BlackBook Magazine column. Lewis is known as the interior designer and erstwhile operator of numerous unhyperlinkable clubs and restaurants throughout the country including Marquee, Tao (Las Vegas), Butter and Aspen Social Club. Today he heads The Nightlife Preservation Society, an organization that advocates on behalf of nightclubs and venues in the face of policies that threaten the culture. In his newest BlackBook installment he shines light on the prejudiced door policies sweeping the scene like a malaise, and provides Santos as the welcome juxtaposition. Specifically, he praises our REOPENED Friday residency as the gold standard in partying despite the post-Jim Crow outlook.
This wouldn't be the first time that the Godfather of Nightlife has shown us some love. Nevertheless, it would do us all well to heed his advice.
The acclaimed RE-OPEN-ED now features DJ Just Blaze and DJ Soul Upstairs with DJs Gravy, Max Glazer and MC Micro Don downstairs. Just Blaze (from the press release) is “the multi-platinum producer and remixer who has laid tracks for Jay-Z, Busta Rhymes, Beastie Boys, Mariah Carey, MF Doom, Janet Jackson, Jay Electronica, Kanye West and many more.” It’s classic hip-hop, house, soul classics, electronic disco and absolutely fantastic. The crowd is a dance crowd, mixed and hot. That’s writers speak to say that there are more non-white people there than in most of the so called “great clubs” around town.
....
This Santos Party is fantastic and I’m going to try to be a regular. I advise you to be there as well. Downstairs I caught my old friend and mainstay Spa Club DJ Max Glazer with Micro Don [and DJ Gravy]. It was joyous mayhem as girls way too hot for me grabbed me and dragged me to the dancefloor. It wasn’t pretty from there, although it made people laugh--and how can that be bad? Santos Party House is what is left of the days of yore. Our complaints, laments and nostalgic waxings are easily answered by their Friday night party.

JUST BLAZE is the new Friday! With DJ Soul, DJ Gravy, Max Glazer and Micro Don!!
EVERY FRIDAY AT 10PM
SANTOS PARTY HOUSE
JUST BLAZE
The psychedelic sped-up vocals of Cam’Ron’s “Oh Boy.” Jay-Z’s dramatic “Interlude” becomes mainstream radio material. Ghostface Killah becomes an act big enough to rival the Wu-Tang Clan itself. What unites these moments, moments that asserted the prominence of true creativity, is production by Justin “JUST BLAZE” Smith. By having mastered turntablism, the art of sampling, percussion (on traps and machines), technology and the manipulation of musical climax, Just Blaze has become one of the most sought-after individuals in the industry, recognized as a living genius with an unique and influential style.
Having produced widely distributed hip-hop tracks since the mid-90’s Just Blaze grew to prominence during the turn of the millennium as half of the in-house production team at Roc-A-Fella records (the other being Kanye West). His addictive use of futuristic sounds combined with horn ensemble samples remixed into post-modern arrangements propelled the careers of many upstarts including Beanie Siegel, Freeway, Joe Budden, Fabolous, Kanye West and Cam’Ron’s Diplomats (Dipset). Aside from his Roc-A-Fella/Def Jam affiliates, he would go on to produce, remix and record tracks with urban music’s biggest artists including Busta Rhymes, Beastie Boys, Mariah Carey, MF DOOM, Lil’ Wayne, T.I., Mos Def… you name a charting rapper and he’s made a beat for them. He currently has collaborations in the works with Eminem and Jay Electronica. His use of sped-up vocal tracks has been co-opted as a hallmark of many other producers, most notably Kanye West, and more alternative acts like Blockhead and Passion Pit.
As a party DJ, he puts down the old school and golden age hip-hop mixed with soul classics that Friday at Santos is known for. But then he veers towards material that might surprise his boom-bap audience. A sly translation pulls the party into a set of deep house, electro, disco both classic and new, and pretty much anything with a proper beats. This open-minded and fearless approach to music selection offers clubbers a glimpse into the creative framework behind today’s most important producers.
DJ SOUL
One of the most trusted names in vinyl, DJ SOUL carved his space amidst hip-hop royalty since the late 90’s, rocking events and projects alongside Dead Prez, Bobbito and Stretch Armstrong. This era would also see him become a staple at high-profile industry parties for likes of Rawkus Records, Triple 5 Soul and Tommy Hilfiger, as well as private events for Russell Simmons, Naomi Campbell, Diddy, Mary J. Blige, Usher and baller status individuals of every stripe. In 2003 he hit the national airwaves on the one’s and two’s for the first season of Chappelle’s Show. His own beats and remixes for remain some of the most provocative arrangements available. As support for Just Blaze, he will be a reliable backbone, a learned selector, and a valuable member of the community.
FEDERATION SOUND: DJ GRAVY, MAX GLAZER, MICRO DON
MAX GLAZER (RIGHT) WITH FEDERATION SOUND SYSTEM ALLIES ALRIC, BOYD AND KENNY MEEZ
It is said that when you’re doing the right thing, the universe conspires towards your success. Proving this theory true time and again is the Federation Sound System crew, who are point blank the most important organization bringing Caribbean music to the New York City. With an extended family that reps from here to Kingston, their core membership holds down the basement every Friday to a mixed crowd of well-traveled music lovers.
MICRO DON (LEFT) AND DJ GRAVY (RIGHT)
Leading the pack is DJ GRAVY, whose mix album series Iration Soundz has made him a lord of the underground, while he leverages a mainstream buzz due to his habit of collaborating on events with big names like Wayne Wonder, Assassin, Erin Wassin, Mr. Vegas, Ricky Powell and Sean Paul. He is a production guru, often working with the Fyre Dept team (Adam Deitch and Eric Krasno). Also manning the decks is MAX GLAZER, touring DJ for Rihanna and Baby Cham, who held down the Rice & Peas residency that united the reggae masses from Brooklyn to Jersey. Playboy has said of his Serious Times mix album, “The mellow vibes kick in and the buzz never fades.” The master of ceremonies is MICRO DON, whose booming voice coaxes the wildest movement from the multitudes.

Toubab Krewe, Break Science and Mamarazzi bringing the vibes tomorrow

TOUBAB KREWE
It was only four years ago that the Bonnaroo staple and culturally transcendent ensemble known as Toubab Krewe crystallized as a cult favorite of jam festival-goers and African music enthusiasts. While most of their classmates at Wilson College were having identity crises, the quintet was redefining the notion of identity altogether, earning a grant to travel to the Ivory Coast, Guinea and Mali to study traditional African instruments and techniques. They emerged having fully incorporated their African education with the folk and rock they grew up playing together.
The Krewe are two percussionists and three string players alternating between electric guitars, basses, the souk, kamel ngoni, and the kora. Their mostly instrumental, heavily improvised music recalls jam-bands like Phish, the Americana folk of Deer Tick and the Afropop tambours of Osibisa. Their 2005 debut LP, consisting primarily of re-arranged African standards, turned heads in the realm of “world music” and solidified their international, acclaim. Afropop Worldwide raved that the release “set a new standard for fusions of rock ‘n’ roll and West African music.”
Their most recent album Live At The Orange Peel is an on-location performance recording featuring all new material including the surf riffs of “51 Ft. Ladder” and the lush percussion of “Maliba.” The album is an incredibly layered and bountiful offering produced by the Grammy-winning Steven Heller (Chet Atkin, David Wilcox). At Santos Party House on November 19th, they will be resurrecting that magic on the best sound system for live music in the city. The coalescence of many musical strains will no doubt reach an unprecedented climax.
“A Toubab Krewe show typically begins in the past, with a brief percussive disquisition on West African rhythms; gradually picks up velocity as more surf, jazz, dub, and hip-hop ideas are stirred into the mix; and ultimately climaxes in a futuristic, psychedelic, neo-griot frenzy.” (THE VILLAGE VOICE)

BREAK SCIENCE (closing)
Adam Deitch is the one-man production/live percussion machine who meshes organic improvisation with deft sampling and breakbeats. He has played alongside Earth, Wind and Fire, Chaka Khan and has produced for Talib Kweli, 50 Cent, Snoop Dogg and MF DOOM to name a few.

MAMARAZZI (opening)
Mamarazzi is the result of the natural magnetism between the ripest of musical facets. Taking the the left-field dub harmonies currently being explored by Tanlines and TV On The Radio, the African rhythmic sensibilities of Antibalas, as well cool jazz inspired arrangements, Mamarazzi has something every serious music lover. Their Myspace cleverly suggests "Mathrobeat" as a term for classification. Members have played with Qustlove, Wyclef, Roy Hargrove, and Farka Toure to name a few.

SHONEN KNIFE
Shonen Knife is one of alternative rock’s most enduring names, as their youthful and uplifting melting pot of styles defies time and classification. One could call them riot grrl, but that would overlook the light-hearted charm of their compositions and subject matter (candy, toys, and enjoyment). One could call them J-pop, but that would negate their raucous punk sound and the moxy they displayed in becoming one of the first internationally acclaimed all girl rock groups. Their notoriety is boosted by some memorable name-drops by Kurt Cobain, Thurston Moore and Wesley Willis among others. This summer they’ve released the new album Super Group, packed full of boisterous jams featuring a new regular member, former touring bassist Ritsuko Taneda.
The band formed in 1981 by sisters Naoko and Atsuko Yamano and Michie Nakatani. Coming from Osaka, Japan, a key site for Western imports, they were heavily influenced by the rock and roll streaming in from the United States and UK. Thus, their sound was a stripped-down take on punk and new wave with an unmistakably do-it-yourself presentation. Unlike their Western counterparts however, their 28 years of rock has not veered from upbeat, frivolous lyrics about animals, food, and friends. Though, at times, their J-pop cutesiness is peppered with the occasional strangeness or controversy. The cut “Dali’s Sunflower” was banned in Japan due to what authorities deemed as too explicit a reference to “going crazy.” “Twist Barbie,” the groups 1983 cut and perhaps their most popular, laments the Western feminine ideal as impossible to attain for Asian girls. Their import-only studio albums were favorites of the US underground rock scene, and in 1986 Sub Pop began releasing and reissuing material in America. In 1989, the tribute album Every Band Has A Shonen Knife That Loves Them was released featuring covers by Sonic Youth, The Mr. T Experience, Redd Kross and more. The band would go on to enjoy the fruits of American stardom, appearing on Late Night With Conan O’Brien, Beavis and Butthead, on CNN and onstage at Lollapalooza.
When Michie left the band in 1999, Atsuko put down the drumsticks took over duties on bass, making room for Etsuko Nakanishi to join the band as a permanent member behind the kits in 2005. In 2008, Atsuko left the band due to her marriage and was replaced by longtime Shonen fan Ritsuko. Super Group came out in May with critics haling the return to form. As Nipponrock.net proclaims “…the music is still as relevant as ever. Silly lyrics, stripped down rock melodies and a potent sense of fun make Super Group a great album.” The Culturedeluxe blog heralded the record as having “something for the metalhead, the pre-schooler AND the acid casualty out there.” On October 16th, they will be playing Santos Party House, also dedicated to fun, for what promises to be a memorable night for the eternally young among us.

MIHO HATORI'S NEW OPTIMISM
Known foremost as the vocalist for Cibo Matto, Miho Hatori has long been establishing herself as a solo composer and envelope-pusher. Her 2006 solo album Ecdysis threw together driving beats that mixed ambient electronic tones with some harsher noise and an airy vocal. Aside from her solo and Cibo endeavors she has lent vocal talent to Gorillaz, Handsome Boy Modelling School, John Zorn, Blackalicious and The 6ths.
Miho Hatori’s New Optimism
SHELLSHAG
Get them before they get too cool for you. Shellshag are an unfairly infectious punk band from Brooklyn with a strong with a cross-coastal appeal. Perhaps a bit gritty but the world will compensate. Don Giovanni Records has just announced that they will be putting out the group’s debut LP which promises to bring their drumset-destroying antics into the comfort of your own home.

NEW ALBUM JHELLI BEAM IN STORES NOW
BUSDRIVER
Regan Farquhar, as nom de plume BUSDRIVER, is known to hip-hop heads as the paradigm of virtuoso lyricism. His elaborate verbal labyrinths communicate the intricacies of the modern psycho-social landscape. On his records, rapid barrages of multi-syllabic rhymes share space with melodic passages resembling Thom Yorke, spontaneous freestyles brimming with wit, and production that marries deft turntablism with psychedelic electro tambours. His newest full-length Jhelli Beam (ANTI-), he brings back the vocal acrobatics that made him famous with some of his more recent forays into experimentation saturated with dark humor.
Busdriver’s roots in hip-hop begin with his father, who was a screenwriter for the cultural milestone Krush Groove. His style fermented at the Good Life CafĂ© in Los Angeles, a South Central health food center with workshops frequented by the likes of Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube and Lenny Kravitz, with performers including The Pharcyde, Xzibit and the groups that would eventually coalesce as Jurassic 5. With all this hip-hop history under his belt, Busdriver became a master rap technician and an incredibly quick-witted freestyler. One of his signature styles is employing the “vocalese” pioneered by Jazz singers like Jon Hendricks which entails tracing vocal melodies over instrumental lines. Though in lieu of jazz solos Busdriver tends to set his raps to classical art music. His 2002 cut “Imaginary Places” used Bach’s “Minuet and Badinerie Orchestral Suite No. 2 in B Minor” as its source, becoming a breakout single featured in the video game Tony Hawk’s Underground .
Lyrically, Busdriver’s eschews the egotism that pervades at all levels of hip-hop in favor of a self-deprecating sense of humor, and a deep understanding of socio-economic sects including fear-addled conservatives, thug poseurs, and the hipsters that hold sway over an indie rapper’s fate (“They wanted good freestyling/ With sarcasm of Woody Allen/ Their parents own oil rigs, they’re just some spoiled kids whom I was aimed to please”). His response to Barack Obama’s inauguration and the “Yes We Can” movement is a collaboration with Flying Lotus called “Will He,” in which he points out “… still the President’s thought of as a thoughtful coon/ As Hannity peddles the fresh nonsense/ having his every press conference remixed and auto-tuned.” The beats that accompany Busdriver’s tongue-in-cheek yet below-the-belt rhymes range from traditional hip-hop breaks to ambient trance passages and circuit-bending electronic maneuvering. Producers have included Danger Mouse, Prefuse 73, Nobody, Free The Robots, D-styles, Daedalus, Paris Zax, Daddy Kev, and Omid. Aside from rapping alongside Aceyalone, MC Paul Barman, Mikah 9, and Abstract Rude, Busdriver’s repertoire boasts many unconventional collaborations including Z-Trip, Th’ Corn Gangg (The Unicorns side project), and Bianca Casady (CocoRosie).
Jhelli Beam, released June 2009, features Busdriver in top form, refining the staple elements of his sound and incorporating more live instrumentation onto spacey production, much of it courtesy of guitarist AntiMC (who also mans the glockenspiel). John Dietrich of Deerhoof provides guitars and “soundscape” on “Fishy Face,” Nicholas Thorburn (The Unicorns, Islands) lends his vocals on “Happy Insider,” and “Handfuls of Sky” features a three-piece string section. And in full force is Busdriver’s critical insight; turning his gaze to mainstream’s hip-hop stasis: “Your favorite dude who champions every Chicago city song/ From his condominium while brandishing his implausible minigun.” The lead single “Me-Time (with the Pulmonary Palimpsest)” brings back the vocalese, this time using Mozart as source material. On September 15th the New York leg of his tour is kicking it at Santos Party House, an ideal home for hip-hop legends and psychedelic collectives alike, where Busdriver will be completely in his element.
ABSTRACT RUDE
In an age where syrup-soaked thug chants and dance instructions rule the hip-hop landscape, there’s a lot to be said for storytelling skills and a passion for crafting vocal lines. Abstract Rude’s sense of rhythm can be likened to that of an Afro-Latin conga player, leaning towards the polyrhythmic, while his delivery moves seamlessly between straight rapping and melodicism that recalls Bone Thugs-N-Harmony. A veteran of Project Blowed, Abstract Rude is a member of the group Haiku D’etat (wth Mikah 9 and Aceyalone) as well as Abstract Tribe Unique (with DJ Drez and Fat Jack). His new album Rejuvenation (RHYMESAYERS) uses rap as a jump-off point into other musical territories including neo-soul and jazz.

ALSO ON SEPTEMBER 15, Friday night resident DJ Q-Tip will be releasing Kamaal The Abstract (BATTERY), an album eight years in the making, produced entirely by Tip and the late J Dilla.
“LA Reid didn't know what to do with it; then, three years later, they release Outkast. What Outkast is doing now, those are the kinds of sounds that are on Kamaal the Abstract. Maybe even a little more out. Kamaal was just me, guerrilla.” (HIPHOPDX)
