Don't know about you, but I think it's about some time for secular fun. The Gregorian Calendar is most helpful for marking that one day when the entire globe decides that they will share 24 hours of reverie. Santos Party House put their weight on it, bringing in the infamous Made Event posse who engineer some of the city's most incredible nights, including the brilliant Respect residency in the summer of 2008. They've put together a wicked line-up to ring in the New Year in the spirit of unadulterated mirth.

LEE BURRIDGE

Many producer's are also disc jockeys and vice versa, but few have managed to excel at both roles with the same finesse as Lee Burridge. Beginning as a mobile disco operator in Great Britain, the early 90's saw his move to Hong Kong where his talent became a galvanizing force for the newborn disco scene. With a foundation in acid house that permeates throughout his eyebrow-raising brand of minimal techno, his original mixes and compositions are keystones for dance music aficionados, as is his Almost Anonymous imprint. A former member of the Tyrant Sound System with DJ Sasha and Craig Richards, Burridge has performed to unruly audiences in every corner of the world and on stage at Burning Man, the San Francisco Love Parade and Save The Cannibals. He has been on DJ Magazine's prestigious top 100 list consecutively since 1999. He told ClubPlanet what distinguished him from other Dj's....

Why do so many DJs look like they aren't having a good time? It's like they're made out of cardboard. This music is amazing. This job isn't a job. We can stay up late and even if you're a butt-ugly DJ, girls seem to pay attention to you. I guess that going out and dancing to music has always been a lot of fun for me and I find it very difficult to stand still when there's a track playing that I like, and I like all the tracks I play!

Fiona: You’re in New York for the MADE EVENT New Year’s Eve gig at Santos Party House – are you excited about that gig? Have you played in New York on NYE before?

Lee: I'm really excited. New York always gets that same flutter of excitement going every time I visit. I think this is actually the first time I've done New Year's Eve. It's going to be good to spend it with friends and I hear Santos Party house is wicked.

SHONEN KNIFE
Shonen Knife is one of alternative rock’s most enduring names, as their youthful and uplifting melting pot of styles defies time and classification. One could call them riot grrl, but that would overlook the light-hearted charm of their compositions and subject matter (candy, toys, and enjoyment). One could call them J-pop, but that would negate their raucous punk sound and the moxy they displayed in becoming one of the first internationally acclaimed all girl rock groups. Their notoriety is boosted by some memorable name-drops by Kurt Cobain, Thurston Moore and Wesley Willis among others. This summer they’ve released the new album Super Group, packed full of boisterous jams featuring a new regular member, former touring bassist Ritsuko Taneda.

The band formed in 1981 by sisters Naoko and Atsuko Yamano and Michie Nakatani. Coming from Osaka, Japan, a key site for Western imports, they were heavily influenced by the rock and roll streaming in from the United States and UK. Thus, their sound was a stripped-down take on punk and new wave with an unmistakably do-it-yourself presentation. Unlike their Western counterparts however, their 28 years of rock has not veered from upbeat, frivolous lyrics about animals, food, and friends. Though, at times, their J-pop cutesiness is peppered with the occasional strangeness or controversy. The cut “Dali’s Sunflower” was banned in Japan due to what authorities deemed as too explicit a reference to “going crazy.” “Twist Barbie,” the groups 1983 cut and perhaps their most popular, laments the Western feminine ideal as impossible to attain for Asian girls. Their import-only studio albums were favorites of the US underground rock scene, and in 1986 Sub Pop began releasing and reissuing material in America. In 1989, the tribute album Every Band Has A Shonen Knife That Loves Them was released featuring covers by Sonic Youth, The Mr. T Experience, Redd Kross and more. The band would go on to enjoy the fruits of American stardom, appearing on Late Night With Conan O’Brien, Beavis and Butthead, on CNN and onstage at Lollapalooza.

When Michie left the band in 1999, Atsuko put down the drumsticks took over duties on bass, making room for Etsuko Nakanishi to join the band as a permanent member behind the kits in 2005. In 2008, Atsuko left the band due to her marriage and was replaced by longtime Shonen fan Ritsuko. Super Group came out in May with critics haling the return to form. As Nipponrock.net proclaims “…the music is still as relevant as ever. Silly lyrics, stripped down rock melodies and a potent sense of fun make Super Group a great album.” The Culturedeluxe blog heralded the record as having “something for the metalhead, the pre-schooler AND the acid casualty out there.” On October 16th, they will be playing Santos Party House, also dedicated to fun, for what promises to be a memorable night for the eternally young among us.

MIHO HATORI'S NEW OPTIMISM
Known foremost as the vocalist for Cibo Matto, Miho Hatori has long been establishing herself as a solo composer and envelope-pusher. Her 2006 solo album Ecdysis threw together driving beats that mixed ambient electronic tones with some harsher noise and an airy vocal. Aside from her solo and Cibo endeavors she has lent vocal talent to Gorillaz, Handsome Boy Modelling School, John Zorn, Blackalicious and The 6ths.

Get them before they get too cool for you. Shellshag are an unfairly infectious punk band from Brooklyn with a strong with a cross-coastal appeal. Perhaps a bit gritty but the world will compensate. Don Giovanni Records has just announced that they will be putting out the group’s debut LP which promises to bring their drumset-destroying antics into the comfort of your own home.

BANG CAMARO
Bang Camaro are Boston’s ultra-group. 20 singers strong with intricate riffs, these guys specialize in writing anthems for awesome. Precision delivery, blistering soloes and glorious harmonies classify their sound. The result is somewhere between the arena rock of the 70’s and the thrash revolution of the early 80’s combined with a modern indie sensibility. Imagine a boys choir gets lost in the forest of Boston for decades and then suddenly emerging, its members hardened and grizzled from surviving off of bear and dragon meat. Now imagine them getting the shit kicked out of them by a badass rock band. That band is Bang Camaro.

TAB THE BAND
Beginning a new paragraph in the history of rock (yeah, I went there) is TAB the Band. Three aggressive punkers push the physical limits of their instruments, but here’s where they cinch it: they’ve got chops. Their fully fleshed out guitar riffs herald a rhythm section that falls somewhere between Motörhead and Sonic Youth. This is the music you’d listen to if your Thunderbird had a CD player.

KITTENS ABLAZE
You might lose your girlfriend due to this band’s name, but Kittens Ablaze’s music is good enough to warrant almost any personal loss. This pop rock ensemble, which a violinist, a cellist, two keyboardists and the occasional harmonica, create layered and expressive tunes that find common ground for punks and folk-rockers. Not to mention they’ve got a sense of melodic harmony that would make Iron Maiden proud.

BLK JKS
Repping South Effrica is BLK JKS, whose ethereal brand of rock and roll is an answer to some long-standing musical questions. Though new to the American limelight, they’ve been a phenomenon in Johannesburg for a decade. Fusing the melodic and rhythmic structure of dub reggae and afro-beat with the distorted and eerie tambers of punk and noise music, BLK JKS has a raw, driving sound in stark contrast to that other famous South African band. Their polyrhythmic approach recalls bebop and progressive rock. Highly recommended for fans of Wayne Shorter, TV On The Radio, Paul Simon, Bad Brains, Led Zeppelin, Battles, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Antibalas, puppies and/or ice cream. No Birkenstocks necessary.

PREACHER AND THE KNIFE (ft DENNIS YOUNG)
Begging the difference between minister and witch doctor is Preacher and the Knife (not Preacher, not The Knife). Bombastic and pulsing percussion is at the helm, alongside abrasive, Gary-Burger-esque vocals and pummeling guitars, creating the soundtrack to a post-punk faith healing. Their dark and supernatural arrangements accompany poetry that focuses on religion and superstition. The result is a musical exorcism that brings a stale music scene back from purgatory. For this performance they will be joined by Dennis Young of Liquid Liquid, pioneers of thump.
