Spencer Sweeney and Andrew Kuo, both multi-instrumentalists and visual artists, represent a scene of culturally ravenous artists and individuals whose uncompromisingly creative vision is the lifeblood of New York City’s downtown. The two have gathered their circle of creatives to essentially resurrect the cult favorite residency Sessions at Santa’s and expand its vision, resulting in a new social experiment dedicated to freedom entitled EMERGENCY PARTY.
At the helm of the roster of residents are Lizzi Bouagatsos (IUD) and Brian Degraw (Smiths Night), also of Gang Gang Dance, throwing down unpredictable sets. Also confirmed are DJ’s Tim Barber, Nick Relph, Rachel Chandler, Sweeney and Kuo will be hitting the decks themselves, and in the house will be MC’s Telfar, Shayne, Allan (The Legend). “Freedom Jams” are the name of the game, and the mammoth upstairs system at Santos will be blasting tunes to expand the mind and coax the will to dance. The party will also feature guest appearances, live sets, pop-up art sessions and oddball curators on a weekly basis. Weird is back with a vengeance.

UNSANE Born from the same primordial East Village collective that produced Sonic Youth, Helmet, Swans and Surgery, Unsane is a refreshingly brutal take on noise rock heavily influenced by early hardcore. Fronted by the throaty screams and hurricane telecaster stylings of Chris Spencer, the band has a sound akin to heavy metal and punk, but exists in an aesthetic all its own, brutal and stoic at the same time. Fifteen years since the release of their preeminent Scattered, Smothered and Covered (Amphetamine Reptile), they have built a tour featuring the album performed in its entirety beginning at Santos Party House.
Unsane formed in 1988, lost its original drummer four years later to heroine, and then in 1994 bassist Peter Shore departed for unknown reasons. The line-up that played on Scattered in 1995, with Vince Signorelli on the traps and Dave Curran on bass, would become the bands most successful incarnation, permanent from that point on. The album featured the single “Scrape” with the MTV favorite music video consisting entirely of severe skateboarding fails. Two subsequent releases came out on Relapse, and in their 2007 Visqueen (Mike Patton’s Ipecac Recordings), in the words of one reviewer, “reminds me what it felt like to listen to them for the first time and just being completely floored by their ungodly amount of power.”
KEELHAUL A refreshing synthesis of doom metal, thrash, math rock and psychedelia, Keelhaul represent the demonic underbelly of Cleveland. Their sound encompasses menacingly aggressive and disturbingly creepy, with dense instrumental interludes and merciless screams. They have been a cult favorite for over a decade, and have appeared on bills alongside Eyehategod, Isis and Mastodon.
PIGS A healthy combination of old school thrash, punk and the noise-saturated hardcore, Pigs play jams that are epic, swaggering, and based upon an otherworldly melodic sensibility.
DISAPPEARER Formed from the remnants of a Boston hardcore outfit, Disappearer’s sound is malevolent, psychedelic, and yet musically refined. They cite as their immediate influences Isis and Neurosis, yet they also credit the aesthetics of Joy Division. Sludge is the foundation of their sound, but their musical competence allows their pieces to reach creative heights that defy classification. Their debut full-length, The Clearing, was produced by Converge’s Kurt Ballou was described by Sputnik Music as “[an] exemplary record filled to the brim with sludgy Post-Metal, and a few refreshing surprises.”
