Spencer Sweeney and Andrew Kuo, both multi-instrumentalists and visual artists, represent a scene of culturally ravenous artists and individuals whose uncompromisingly creative vision is the lifeblood of New York City’s downtown. The two have gathered their circle of creatives to essentially resurrect the cult favorite residency Sessions at Santa’s and expand its vision, resulting in a new social experiment dedicated to freedom entitled EMERGENCY PARTY.

At the helm of the roster of residents are Lizzi Bouagatsos (IUD) and Brian Degraw (Smiths Night), also of Gang Gang Dance, throwing down unpredictable sets. Also confirmed are DJ’s Tim Barber, Nick Relph, Rachel Chandler, Sweeney and Kuo will be hitting the decks themselves, and in the house will be MC’s Telfar, Shayne, Allan (The Legend). “Freedom Jams” are the name of the game, and the mammoth upstairs system at Santos will be blasting tunes to expand the mind and coax the will to dance. The party will also feature guest appearances, live sets, pop-up art sessions and oddball curators on a weekly basis. Weird is back with a vengeance.

When Damon Dash opened his fine art gallery at 172 Duane St. on February 19 2010, he unleashed an immediately consequential force onto the New York scene. The date marked not only the opening of the space but the birth of DD172, an integrated collective of the leading independent media companies in the city. The group’s rise to prominence has been meteoric, with branches dedicated to meet every need of today’s artists and consumers. There’s the digital broadcasting wing Creative Control, print shop and graphic design center the Color Bar, the BluRoc and BlakRoc record labels, the American Nu zine and the Karin & Raoul publication dedicated to fashion and the arts. Their roster of clients and collaborators includes Curren$y, SkiBeatz, Peter Hadar, Rachel Roy, KRSP, Cool Kids, Trademark, Smoke DZA, Big Chop, and more. Their diversity is underscored by a uniform level of quality and creativity in accordance to DD172’s mission, which “sets out to prove that combining the talents of a creative collective and an independent DIY [do-it-yourself] environment can break conformity and bring about a new enlightenment to the world of media.”

While events in the fine arts atmosphere of the Dash Gallery are high-profile and high-brow, there comes a time for an all-out celebration where big name talent graces the stage and spilling beer on a revolutionary work of art is not a concern. Enter BRIDGING THE GAP, DD172’s weekly party at a durable venue with an emphasis on production values, the nearby Santos Party House. The party will reach deep into the city’s pool of talent, featuring top notch guest headliners every time, starting with CAMP LO and STALLEY on August 16, 2010. The resident band is SKIBEATZ & THE SENSEIS, a full live ensemble built around the MPC skills of Ski, the legendary producer of Jay-Z’s “Dead Presidents II” and numerous golden age gems.

BRIDGING THE GAP is a multi-entendre title, referring to the unification of multiple eras, genres, styles, demographics and mediums. It will be a platform for the best the city has to offer as well as a venue for talent that is a step ahead of trends. Santos and DD172 are proud to answer the prayers of anyone looking for something truly interesting and incredibly fun on a Monday night.

Few vocal performers have achieved the level of acclaim and longevity enjoyed by Tony Clifton. Discovered by the Hollywood elite in the late 1960’s, Clifton soon became a worldwide sensation and beloved television personality. From David Letterman, to Rodney Dangerfield, to Merv Griffin, to the Muppets, nearly every mover and shaker in the entertainment has sought out a Tony Clifton collaboration or performance. His velvety and sensuous voice, charming banter and warm stage presence has delighted high-profile audiences in lounges, concert halls, theaters and stadiums.

A great many obstacles came Tony Clifton’s way after his rise to fame, including public falling outs with Jerry Lawler, Dinah Shore, Andy Kaufman, and others who attempted to use his name to bolster their own careers. However, Clifton fought off all adversity and remains the king of lounge singers into the 21st Century. At Santos Party House he will be joined by the Katrina Kiss My Ass Orchestra, a full big band ensemble that does soulful justice to the best in standards. Get ready to be dazzled by Tony Clifton!

VAGINAL DAVIS and PME

Prolific columnist, publisher, blacktress, drag majesty, choreographer, activist, performance artist, punk rocker and dancehall ruler, Vaginal Davis is an influential figure in all corners of underground media. She has collaborated with the likes of John Cameron Mitchell, Rick Castro, Bruce LaBruce and the Cheap collective (Berlin). She is the editor of Fertile La Toyah Jackson Magazine and Shrimp, with publications in LA Weekly and Glue. Her punk rock collaboration with Glen Meadmore is PME (for Pedro, Muriel and Esther) and has released the cult classic album The White To Be Angry produced by Steve Albini.

Singer, multi-instrumentalist, spoken work artist and philosopher Genesis Breyer P-Orridge has been one of the most recognizable figures of fringe music since the the 70’s. She is a core member of industrial noise pioneer band Throbbing Gristle, as well as the punk wave outfit Psychic TV and now Thee Majesty, the ensemble that combines punk, noise and P-Orridge’s spoken word contributions.

AMBER ASYLUM
Kris Force unites with various allies in the gothic world (members of Neurosis, Hammers of Misfortune, Weakling and Giant Squid), to create a symphonic ambience that is misanthropically dark. Driven by cello and violin as well as haunting vocals, the music is a folkloric take on neoclassical post rock.

ARRINGTON DE DIONYSO
A sound sculptor who has a particular mastery of the woodwinds and human larynx, Arrington de Dionyso’s manifests multiple eccentric concepts and frameworks for improvisation. His main tools are jagged assaults at free jazz instrumentation, twisted throat singing and a combination of the two. He liberally incorporates avant garde dancing, homespun instruments and props.

LARKIN GRIMM
The Applachian daughter of cult-member parents creates music that is rife with psychic energy and the urge to return to the primal. Deftly picked strings that invoke the tambours of country folk mixing with a haunting vocal and the incursion of chillingly dark electronic sounds are the hallmarks of her sound.

NAUTICAL ALMANAC

Currently waving the banner for Baltimore noise is the duo Twig Harper and Carly Ptak, both visual artists and the taylors of electronic contraptions and music that’s about as horrifically uplifting as can make sense. They create experimental noise that nods to metal, minimal techno, jazz and punk. No strangers to concept either, their ’98 album Rooting for Microbes employed no electricity in the creation of sound. They have collaborated with Andrew W.K., Wolf Eyes, Nate Young and more.

MONICA RICHARDS (of Faith and the Muse)Poet, painter and philosopher Monica Richards just happens to be a punk veteran from the DC wells from which sprang Bad Brains and Minor Threat. In the early 90’s her notoriety grew with Faith and the Muse, her duo project with William Faith, which incorporated her punk roots along with electronic music, experimentalism, jazz, art music, folk along with the songwriting sensibilities of pop. Her solo music continues in this direction, with a tendency towards the multi-media.

JOHN ZORN & BILL LASWELL
Both originators of free and experimental jazz since the mid-70’s, Zorn and Laswell are improvisational legends in multiple sects of sub-culture. Each with foundations in jazz music (Zorn on woodwinds and Laswell on bass ), their ensemble performances often include brilliant compositions and structures in which improvisation can flourish. They regularly collaborate with each other and have also worked with Lou Reed, Anthony Braxton, Mike Patton, Serj Tankian, Motorhead, White Zombie, Fred Firth, Iggy Pop, Kronos Quartet, Herbie Hancock and Derek Bailey.
