Vext Fest

TOMMY VEXT BENEFIT: God Forbid, Mutiny Within, Dead Men Dreaming, Timeless, Human Decline, Empyreon, The Judas Syndrome and A Great Day To Die
Sunday, November 28, 2011

On September 19, 2010, former Snot and Divine Heresy vocalist Tommy “Vext” Cummings was attacked with a crowbar by his strung out brother. He was left with arm and skull fractures, as well as massive internal bleeding that resulted in the loss of his spleen. Given Vext’s notable physical stature, his wounds are healing quickly and he is in physical therapy, but he still faces hospitable bills that total $75,000-80,000. Hoping to put a dent in this mountainous sum, his friends in the world of music have put together a benefit to be held at Santos Party House on the afternoon of November 28.

Headlining the night will be God Forbid, known as New Jersey’s champions of metalcore, whose lead guitarist Doc Coyle is currently writing and recording a forthcoming project with Vext. God Forbid are Ozzfest veterans who have played alongside Slayer, Lamb of God, Cannibal Corpse, Children of Bodom, Andrew W.K., Marylin Manson, and As I Lay Dying. Also rocking the two-floor event are shred zealots Mutiny Withn, apocalyptic party moshers Dead Men Dreaming and the impetuous hardcore prankster franchise Timeless. Human Decline will be doling out traditional hardcore riffage, Empyreon will bring their driving progressive death metal arsenal, The Judas Syndrome will be providing a thrash metal blow to the audience’s collective face, and A Great Day To Die will be opening up with with the sinister death grooves. All box office proceeds will be donated to Vext’s recovery, alongside the efforts of every artist and venue staff member for the night.

Santos is proud to be a part of this moment, and we look forward to partying unprecedentedly hard in honor of our good friend, who told the following to Metal Insider:

You know, although it might have seemed like I just walked through hell, I honestly have so much gratitude in my heart for everything my friends and family have done to help me in my darkest hour. The e-mails and calls from the fans have been a saving grace as well. I truly hope that everyone who comes out November 28th to Santos Party House has a blast. There’s gona be giveaways drink specials and cool raffle prizes. I don’t want to have a fucking pity party you know, we’re gonna make this fun. You know to me, this show is a testament to the camaraderie and strength of the heavy metal community. How even in tragedy we can unite and make something positive happen. I mean isn’t that why we all got into this anyway?

Peelander-Z headlining this Saturday w/ Starscream (Engadget, MTV)

Peelander-Z, Starscream, and Tsu Shi Ma Mi Re live
Saturday, November 20, 2010

The explosive Nippon punk of Peelander-Z is swirled with xylophones and harmonies known for winning over the most jaded rock scenesters in the city. Their live shows are unique for their reliance on audience participation, wherein members are encouraged to play instruments and sing with the band, as well as participate in some more outlandish acts including limbo dancing and something called “human bowling.” They’ve hit the stage alongside Electric Six, Guitar Wolf, The Notorious MSG, with appearances on the Upright Citizen’s brigade TV series and VH1’s The Best Week ever.

The multi-chapter progressive power anthems composed by Damon Hardjowirogo and George Stroud make incredibly resourceful use of every texture and tambour available via the 8-bit chips of the Game Boy and Comodore 64. Their arrangements are driving, suspenseful and manifold, combining the deceptive complexity of vintage gaming music and a mature pop aesthetic. Recently they've caught the ear of the industry, appearing as a featured artist on the Engadget tech show and providing music to the trailer for the new MTV program Skins.

Friendly and light at first glance, the riot grrl-inspired pop of Japanese trio Tsu Shi Ma Mi Re has undeniable range thanks to their superior musicianship. They move from tight ska riffs to slow indie grooves without hesitation, and lay it on heavy with vocal harmonies and ambitious melodies.

Our Show Returns: Das Racist Interview

Another clip from the "Our Show" series filmed on location at Santos Party House has been released, featuring an interview with Das Racist in which the italo folk rap trio discusses Dwayne from the East Village, the Illuminati shadow government and the growing popularity of e-readers. Host Elliot Aronow (of RCRDLBL) told the Village Voice about it first, but that doesn't mean he thinks Zach is cooler than I am.

Also just released is the first installment of The Nancy Show mini-series by Nancy Whang, this time with guest Holy Ghost and the Fancy Nancy Dancer (Light Asylum - playing here 12/11 with Violens).
