CHOICE CUNTS
After a couple of years packing out Brooklyn hot spots and growing Choice Cunts into the most talked-about gay residency in the city, Ellie Conant moved her monthly party to downtown Manhtattan’s Santos Party House in early 2009. Not one regular was lost in the process, in fact the party grew its size and notoriety thanks to the ample space and the premium audio visual systems in the venue. The masses are now taking notice; The Village Voice has been installing monthly online slideshows by Maro Hagopian, the Choice Cunts resident photographer, highlighting the intense revelry and diverse crowd of fierce women in the room.
Choice Cunts has made a point of featuring emerging queer talent and DJ’s, including Little Body and the Big Sound, DJ Huckwild, Jane Bang and DJ Soozee. Gogo dancers and celesbian bartenders are also in the mix, alongside notable attendees that have included Chloe Sevigny and Kim Stolz. Is not just a lipstick lesbian shindig, as nearly every end of the gay spectrum is represented, earning the party the 2010 GO Magazine award for Most Eclectic Crowd. On June 26, for Gay Pride Week, the party is moving to the upstairs level of the Party House, partnering up with numerous sponsors and has taken on downtown legend as a headlining DJ.
PRINCESS SUPERSTAR
Philadelphia native and nothing short of a hip-hop pioneer, Princess Superstar displays the skill and originality that makes it impossible for her imitators to fill her slippers. A veritable factory of progressive and sexually liberated sound, Princess Superstar fills the role of rapper, producer and DJ, flawlessly executing each responsibility with a distinct style. Fugazi samples mix with disco and house beat constructions resulting in a sound that defines the modern disco scene below 14th street. Her rap style is dense, earning her more comparisons to the likes of MF DOOM and Eminem than other participants in the rising tide of girl rap whose style is more style than substance. She has worked with club legends like Arthur Baker, Larry Tee, Junior Sanchez, Todd Terry, as well as stalwart hip-hop legends Grandmaster Flash, Kook Keith, MC Paul Barman and DJ Mighty Mi. At the Choice Cunts 3rd Annual Pride Party she will grace the wheels of steel in the name of counterculture everywhere.
