UNDERDOG
Formed in the mid-80’s when being hardcore was synonymous with squats and bruises, Underdog have long been a universal favorite of the scene, representing a holistic sound that incorporated classic rock influences into an aggressive foundation. The songwriting duo that propels them is Richie Brikenhead and Russ “Wheeler” Iglay, on vocal and bass guitar duties respectively, who have employed a rotating cast of guitarists and drummers in proprietary punk rock fashion. Their 1989 record The Vanishing Pointremains a golden moment in Hardcore history, fusing New York street smarts, blistering hardcore as well as the reggae influences explored by their contemporaries (Bad Brains et al). Underdog will be making history once again at Santos Party House, celebrating the release of their newest album Matchless on June 12.

HUB CITY STOMPERS
There is no force of nature that could compare to the Hub City Stompers’ army of instruments, the ripping guitars, machinegun drums and booming horns. Formed in the earlier part of the oughts, HCS fancy themselves as having “romanced ska’s rotted corpse, playing for the love of the music rather than the popularity of it….” Snide, cheeky lyrics and reggae rhythms lend a conscious vibe, allowing them to address the modern realities that surround them with a brutally honest attitude.

INHUMAN
Fast, dark and hard as hell, Inhuman has been providing unadulterated hardcore to Brooklyn for fifteen years. With releases on I Scream and A-F Records, and a roster that includes former members of Agnostic Front, these guys maintain loyalty and credibility in numerous underground circles. They are distinguished for their varied sense of melody and their conscious lyrics, all punk rock calls to arms.

BILLY CLUB SANDWICH
Billy Club Sandwich is all about the great taste of relentless brutality. Their sound, simply put, is pile-drivingly fast riffage with no frills. They represent Westchester and the Bronx, where their juggernaut style saturates the fledgling scenes, and their unforgettable stage presence has made them legend. They have shared the stage with the likes of Harley’s War, Killing Time, and Sworn Enemy, twice gracing the stage at the Super Bowl of Hardcore.

ANDREW W.K.
The recent wave of interviews, articles, and even a town hall-style meeting, was an attempt by Andrew W.K. to combat the bizarre controversies and conspiracy theories that surrounded his identity. But ultimately, nothing has proven more effective to certify his authenticity than his recent critically lauded and explosive musical performances. Shortly before returning to full-ensemble rock shows and the US release of his “lost third album” Close Calls With Brick Walls, he turned heads with 55 Cadillac, an LP of improvised solo piano performance released on Thurston Moore’s Ecstatic Peace label. Dynamic, diverse and technically flawless, the album is the product of a lifetime’s mastery of the instrument and an anthemic aesthetic that made Andrew W.K. an international superstar. After a string of highly publicized SXSW shows, he will be returning to the solo instrumental format at Santos Party House.

MON KHMER
The Berklee-trained quintet Mon Khmer create ethereal, groove-based and layered indie rock without the effects overdoses and computer-generated “lo-fi” sounds that are dominating the scene. Despite bucking the trends, they have earned praise from BrooklynVegan, Stylecaster, Dummymag (UK) and The L Magazine, who calls them “heavy and dense, but in the best possible way - you can pick up something different with each listen.” Their harmonized guitar riffs tumble into space-age synths and pulsing drums that maintain danceable, head-nodding rhythms.

ROADSIDE GRAVES
For Roadside Graves, art imitates death. The theme of mortality rules the lyrics of John Gleason, whose seven-piece ensemble includes a farfisa and banjo and features a heavy, country fried twang and gospel harmonies. Of their 2009 LP My Son’s Home, Pitchork says, “There are moments of haunting, fragile stillness here...Perhaps most admirably of all, the Roadside Graves excel at the brave and difficult paradox of suffusing death with life, injecting vivacity and humor into their reflections on mortality.”

DERADORIAN
As the bassist for the Dirty Projectors, Angel Deradoorian has already earned a reputation for clever, unsettling pop music. Her psychedelic side project is a foray into the dark side, buoyed by instrumentalism in the realms of folk and electronica, capped with a vocal range that easily slides from subdued to booming.

FAITH AND THE MUSE
Monica Richards and Williams Faith were each holding down spots in seminal underground troupes. The former was the fiery vocalist of harDcore mainstay Strange Boutique, and the latter a multi-instrumental polymath holding down the guitars for goth-prog superstars Shadow Project. When the two shared a bill in 1993, they found each other to be kindred spirits, sharing a passion for elevating the mystical and transcendental aspects of rock music and darkwave. The two began the longtime collaboration Faith And The Muse, a pan-epochal excursion into dark, tribal, ethnic and electronic sound. The profound diversity of FatM’s catalog is its most distinguishing characteristic, with some songs resembling heavy metal and others resembling celtic dirges. They have also taken to acoustic performance, with heavy neo-classical overtones. 2009’s Ankoku Butoh (The Mercy Ground) borrows its lyrical and musical themes heavily from Japanese Shinto culture. 17 years and countless styles in the making, the duo has kept true to their stated vision: “Faith And The Muse's purpose is clear. While sequestering us inside the mythical and mystical environment of their Otherworldly music, they bring to light the real elements that are true within all of us: a quiet and perfect human connection that has guided our hearts throughout history, yet in this world, is commonly lost.”

WEEP
What’s not to like about a new wave group with a sense of humor? Weep is the magnetic mixture of 80’s post-punk and modern shoegaze to please the goth, with a proto-punk sneer that lends levity and danceability to their airy arrangements (which include a Rihanna cover). Keep your eye on these guys – they belong to their art and it shows.

Hosting the night and providing the spins is Berlin’s own dark music goddess DJ Scary Lady Sarah.

Nader Sadek's B'doun O'mr/Ageless tomorrow with members of Morbid Angel, Cryptopsy and Behold... The Arctopus

On November 21, 2009 at 9pm, Santos Party House will proudly present, “B'doun O'mr (Ageless)” the new performance work by Nader Sadek.

In “Ageless,” a hyperbolic amalgamation of long-haired death metal musicians and a fully-veiled Middle Eastern woman is created when near mythical characters of an “extreme” nature merge. Ostensibly dark and menacing, these figures will be blended into one image. The hair covering the faces of each character functions as a replacement for the veil/mask. In the middle of an installation of conceptually-loaded objects, the five characters will perform a sonic composition. These elements create an atmosphere of hostility, reflecting and rejecting the supposed political dichotomy of East versus West. Objects found in the earlier stages of the artist’s series are thus transformed: The mashrabeya (ornate wooden lattice) that was employed to delineate private and public space in a previous performance held at the SculptureCenter is now deconstructed and returned to its basic natural shape—a glossy black tree trunk.

Given the imagined ideology of these combined cultures—now manifested in an independent figure—the goal of this creation is to bring these worlds back to Nature, to a fundamentally primitive existence, which is admittedly unachievable. The art objects used in the performance will stand free of apparent meaning, in a gesture that seeks to suspend the purported need for clearly defining this new environment and challenges art world conventions. With ambiguity defining much of the performance and an inherent tension surfacing as a spatial push and pull between the unrestrained subject (the artist and band members) and the spectator (the viewer), notions of objectification and turmoil will lead to ultimate transcendence.

Born in Cairo, Nader Sadek is an emerging conceptual artist based in New York. His installations and performances aim to blur configurations of private and public, while exorcising the holy and profane and evoking ritualistic restraint and impulsive aggression. He has exhibited in the US and abroad and has toured with some of the most influential death metal musicians in the world, having contributed original installations and costumes to Mayhem and Sunn O))). His previous works have been reviewed by the Village Voice, The Guardian, The Herald Tribune and the New Yorker.

VALIENT THORR
The unfortunate stereotype that plagues Venusian extra-terrestrials is that they lack any sense of groove. However, when Valient Thorr landed in 2001, all that changed and pretty quickly, as their space-age riffs became the standard in psychedelic metal. Alien in-jokes aside, Valient Thorr do serve up a helping of fringe worldview with good old fashioned political dissent, including barbs aimed at predatory capitalism and modern day warfare, not to mention the underlying culture of conformity and oppression. Their deft riffs and solos, pounding percussion and soulful vocal recall the early metal structure laid by the likes of Thin Lizzy through the lens of current-day brutality a la Arch Enemy or Mastodon.

While their most hardcore followers, or Thorriors, have created their own culture based on cult fandom, the balanced sound of Valient Thorr has inevitably crept into the mainstream. They are Warped Tour staples and have also shared the stage with the likes of Motörhead, Joan Jett, Andrew W.K., NOFX, AFI, and Eagles of Death Metal . The video games Guitar Hero II, Need For Speed: Carbon and Skate all boast Valient Thorr tunes on their soundtracks. Their 2008 album Immortalizer (Volcom Entertainment) was produced by Jack Endino (Nirvana, Mudhoney, Soundgarden, High On Fire) and, according to Indyweek.com, features the band sounding “exactly like it should right now.” 7:00PM on November 17 at Santos Party House are the coordinates for when Valient Thorr will be transcending time and space.

RED FANG
Marrying ornate psychedelia with doomsayer metal until they have crystallized into something beyond awesome, Red Fang is the breath of fresh air that so many scenes are desperately needing. Their wide canvas of heavy sound has landed them live spots alongside the likes of Kylesa, Early Mann and Wizard Smoke.

BANG CAMARO
Bang Camaro are Boston’s ultra-group. 20 singers strong with intricate riffs, these guys specialize in writing anthems for awesome. Precision delivery, blistering soloes and glorious harmonies classify their sound. The result is somewhere between the arena rock of the 70’s and the thrash revolution of the early 80’s combined with a modern indie sensibility. Imagine a boys choir gets lost in the forest of Boston for decades and then suddenly emerging, its members hardened and grizzled from surviving off of bear and dragon meat. Now imagine them getting the shit kicked out of them by a badass rock band. That band is Bang Camaro.

As brash and insidious as their name would suggest, this Boston outfit is drugged out rockabilly meets noise pop for a danceable yet demented jaunt. The sociopathic swing that is That Handsome Devil is paired nicely with the sadistic and nihilistic lyrics that make sensuous art out of tongue-in-cheek wickedness.

HOCICO

We often hear the argument that musicians are conduits, and nowhere is this more apparent than with Hocico, who manage to sonically channel the gritty and tormented landscape of Mexico City. Now one of the leading worldwide names in aggrotech, Hocico began with cousins Eric Garcia and Oscar Mayorga messing around with a Casio and continuing to amass their acclaim as fast as they did their equipment. Their first homemade demo Misuse, Abuse and Accident earned their nationwide buzz despite a first pressing of only 30 copies. Eight albums later they have toured in spots as far and wide as Japan and London.

Garcia and Mayorga at one point tried hiring a guitar player but quickly learned that their music had no need. Though danceable and thoroughly synthesized, the fear and desolation in their work is distilled and unadulterated, with a piercing bilingual vocal to guide the music’s explorations of violence and sexual abuse. Metal Storm wrote of their 2001 album "Signos de Aberracion flows with its nocturnal pulse as one from its very first second until its last consuming your full attention as it drowns you in a world where the weak and the humiliated ones of nowadays' rotten society take control and take back what society has stolen from them, life.” On October 8, this globetrotting duo of darkness will be testing the limits of Santos Party House’s sound and light systems.

Merging gothed-out electro foundation with aggrotech and noise rock, Life Cried of New Jersey are have created a seamless and driving that pummels you with disturbing samples and brutal percussion after it lulls you in with seductive melodies and grooves. Their second album Banished Pslams has been well-received; quoth the UK’s Sphere magazine, “It’s an exciting and brutal kind of Industrial that will please fans of dark-electro and black metal alike.”
