James Dewitt Yancey, known to music lovers as J. Dilla or Jay Dee, became a prominent force in production as a part of the seminal hip-hop group Slum Village. With a reputation for magnifying spacious vintage samples with well-measured drums, he became a favorite producer of A Tribe Called Quest, Erykah Badu, Talib Kweli, De La Soul, as well as a member of the Soulquarians supergroup (alongside Questlove). His solo career yielded the amazing Donuts series, as well as a cult favorite duet project with the producer Madlib (entitled JayLib), whose style was influenced directly by Dilla's.

Dilla's untimely death in 2006 left the hip-hop world grieving and amiss for his work. To this day artists are finding new and creative ways of using his distinct production, resulting in a posthumous career that rivals 2pac's. As a tribute to this legend, Rare Form have put together the annual Donuts Are Forever parties, with proceeds going to the J Dilla Foundation which supports inner-city music education and provides scholarships for the underprivileged. Providing music will be New York's turntable king Rich Medina, the production renaissance man DJ Spinna, and many more, each a talented DJ and selector in her/his own right.
